Secure private messages are one of the safest forms of electronic communication.  This exclusive feature uses unbreakable encryption to ensure your messages can only be read by their intended recipients.
For your security, we highly recommend that you enable them now and use them for all sensitive correspondence!

Fixed with proper emphasis.

There's no such thing as unbreakable encryption, especially if it's reversable.

Yeah yeah there's a bit of hyperbole in that statement I guess. I should probably revise it to read that the "feature uses secure encryption to ensure your messages can only be read by their intended recipients". After all, like you say nothing is truly unbreakable. However I stand by the statement that secure PMs are one of the safest forms of electronic communication. Barring impractical tactics like one time pads, or exotic methods like quantum encryption, it's about as good as it gets. However if you have any improvements to suggest I'm certainly listening.

Peace,

-Y

How about we send you random pr0n images and you spunk onto a DNA/impact sensitive plate to generate codes?
It's alot of work, but hell, it'd be secure as FUCK, especially once you wiped off the receptor.

Sure there's always that risk with the approach we've taken. The only way around that is to do the encryption client-side, like Hushmail with their Java applet. However, if people examine our SSL certificate instead of blindly clicking "ok", they can help ensure that everything's kosher. I mean that is kind of the point of having a signed certificate to begin with.

Anyway secure PMs are mainly intended to offer a layer of protection in the event our server is seized or compromised, and for this they serve their purpose well. I think that's a much more likely scenario than someone launching a sophisticated man in the middle attack targeting one of our users.

Randolph that's a great idea. However with the volume of secure PMs that pass through our server I could end up with some serious chafing. Instead of using a DNA sensitive plate, I was thinking maybe the inside of your colon?

*nod* I agree with you fully on this aspect of it but...

It doesn't even take a sophisticated man in the middle attack, necessarily, though! My main point of this thread was that the message was somewhat, uh, over exuberant about the OVER ALL security of said secure private messages.

I think it's a great feature and it's certainly not like too many other sites offer such things!

Yeah true enough, and nobody benefits from a false sense of security. Anyway the message has been changed to something more accurate:

Quote:

You have not yet enabled secure private messages for your account!
This feature uses asymmetrical encryption to help ensure your messages can only be read by their intended recipients.
For your security, we highly recommend that you enable them now and use them for all sensitive correspondence!

Hopefully this will help people see secure PMs for what they are, one of many tools you can use to ensure your privacy online and not a magical solution.

Peace,

-Y
