Notification about changes concerning private messages
    #2323366 - 02/11/04 06:58 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

This notification has been emailed today to all Shroomery members. In case that somebody didn't receive it, I will repost it here.

As of today, all the members together have nearly 300,000 stored private messages (PMs).
According to the statistics, around 20%(!!) of those have never been read at all, leading to the conclusion that they are on abandoned accounts.

We would like to reduce this number of stored messages considerably for 2 main reasons:
1. These message occupy nearly 300 MB of database space. This is something which is usually not a major problem for the database, but in the event of a database crash with corrupted tables it makes the recovery process longer. In addition to this there is always a chance that some data can not be recovered and is then lost forever.
2. The second probably more important reason is the amount of personal information stored in those PMs. This is a GREAT security risk for our members in the (unlikely but possible) event that the government seizes the server together with all the information that is on it.

We would like to keep the amount of stored PMs on the server as small as possible without making the use of the PMs undesirable.

Thus we would like the people go through the messages and download the ones they want to keep through the email message function.

Instructions on how to use this function can be found under the following URL:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Number=2323212

Please go through your messages NOW.
Starting 1 Week from today all private messages older than 90 days will be deleted in regular intervals. So please keep the amount of stored private messages to a minimum and always secure the messages that are important to you by the use of the email PM function and delete them from server.
Don't forget to secure also the stored sent PMs should you have any.

Thank you for your understanding,
For the Shroomery administration,
Anno

The PM 2 Email needs 2 be altered. It fill the email address 4 times in the From. And 2 times in the To. And the reply To also has the reply address in there twice.

This might speed up the sending and recieving of the email.  :wink:

Is there a way we can just forward the messages we want to keep back to ourselves so they wont be 90 days old? I just have a desent amount of messages that I'd like to keep w/o filling up my e-mail...

Obviously not, this would defeat the whole goal of this change.

You can always download your emails to your computer and file the PMs locally.

just hit the 'check all' button followed by the 'email pm' button, it's not that hard.

Rather than deleting after 90 days though I think it would be better to limit the number of stored messages, so everyone has a quota of say 50 PM's

It's a secret plot to annoy important people who have loads of stored PM's, and make them feel like any old average user

That's a good point, MetaShroom. Thanks! :smile:

PS: The two reasons Anno stated are the only two reasons for this. This idea initially came up out of performance concerns (the same as the expiration and archiving of old threads in certain forums), and the second security reason definitely closed the deal. All of the Admins discussed this thoroughly, and we all agreed. I don't know about the others, but I do know that Thor and I both have over 4,000 incoming PMs saved, and thousands of outgoing PMs, that we're going to lose if we don't backup via e-mail, and we're in favor of it -- for the exact reasons Anno mentioned above.

I thought a big part of it was to just delete PMs from abandoned accounts since they were just taking up space.

The HTML in the mail doesn't work(Outlook Express). It looks like this:

<html>
<head>
<title></title>
</head>
<body>
From: DONOTDELETE<br /><br />
Subject: Re: ....<br /><br />
Date: 06/09/03 06:52 PM<br /><br /><br />
censored<body>
</html>

Not much of a problem, just trying to help.

?????

That came out of nowhere.

If those PMs are valuable why wouldn't you save them onto your computer as its always possible that you'd lose ALL of them in a server crash.

I'm in the same boat, I have over 4000 PMs and lots of ones that mean something to me or have info I don't want to lose. So I'll join the weary people who have to save them, but to be honest its a good idea to have them backed up anyhow.

What kind of conspiracy do you think this is anyhow?

Man this shit gets old, always has to be someone who flips out or thinks some evil conspiracy is behind normal decisions made to benefit the operation of a website.

:wtf: :shake:

note to MM: You can easily get a free email account at a place like hotmail or mail.com and store your messages there. I had a few hundred to email to myself and they are taking up VERY little space in my mail.com inbox.

That's right, kids! And, after that, we're having a massive PM sale! All PMs will be drastically marked-down to move -- 50% off of the dealer invoice! You heard me right, that's 50% off! So get those PMs ready, because we're on a Mission From God to move those PMs out of here and into your e-mail accounts! :laugh:

People, don?t forget to secure also your sent PMs, if you feel there is anything important for you there!

According to the plan, the private messages should expire today, but we will wait till Friday to give you a few more days if haven?t saved the messages yet.

Awwww I hit a sore spot. Must be rough having the users hear the truth... since you didn't bother to correct me. Guaranteed that dropping even a few hundred thousand PMs won't speed any page up by more than half a second.

Truth? What truth?
That you kept 2 servers worth $2000+ bought with Shroomery's money??
That you kept $1000+ of the advertisers fees that were payed in advance??
That you still have the Shroomery database with all the messages we are going to delete here due to security reasons?? (Nobody ever said it is going to speed up page load, bother to read the post first...)

You have your website that needs MUCH, MUCH work to become anything worthwhile to visit , why are you waisting your time here?
Don?t post here just to post, use your time for something beneficial, don?t waste your and our time here.

The servers were running Shroomery fine, you guys chose to change the DNS to point to a different crappy one. It was your choice not mine. They are sitting in the same exact spot they have been for the last 10 months.

The advertisers that had paid before didn't come close to $1000, and the money had already been spent to pay for the Shroomery's hosting.

My website has a much better start than Shroomery did when it first began, so don't worry about it.

You're going to steal things from me and then expect me to hand over even more things that I worked hard to bring to fruitation... I'm not a fucking retard.

I'm paying half a grand a month to fulfill the contract I signed for Shroomery, with less than 1/4 of the money you have coming in, and you sit here and bitch. Do your user's a favor and actually LISTEN to them. You will see that they would rather have their PMs kept on the server.

Helllllllo, let's not dance with the skeletons from the closet, hmm?  Don't wanna be closing important threads like this one, or banning important members like yourself.

FYI, we have still not yet broke even from the December switch.  We've put more $ into the site and still must invest roughly 2x more than we've already put into the new server and hosting necessary to get this place fully operational again and running legitimately.  Any of the admins, technical or otherwise, can vouch for this as I've been posting balance sheets for both the vendors billing cycles in addition to the main Shroomery holdings for all administrators to review.  So wherever this $1000 of profit is comin' from, I sure ain't seein' it :crazy:

It might help to add a delet message tickbox, at the bottom of
an open pm. This makes it easyer to delet the message as you
reply to it, as they tend to build up unoticed, after you have replyed to them.

If I'm an important member, why is Anno saying that my opinion is not welcomed here? I was simply trying to point out that keeping the PMs of the currently active memberbase would not make or break the site. I just see it doing more bad than good. Personally I've tried a few email addresses and am unable to recieve emails sent from the shroomery, making it impossible for me to backup my PMs.

My $1000+ figure came from the fact that you are bringing in roughly $1600 a month in banner revenues. Is it really going to make you guys go broke if you spend a little extra money and keep the PMs around? I know when I was first starting out as a Shroomery admin, I but many dollars of my personal income into the site to keep it 'without limits' as far as pic uploads, PM space, etc goes.

You have 6-7 admins to contribute, when there was only Thor and myself to contribute back in the day. You guys can't be hurting THAT bad, not badly enough to warrant taking features away from users.

I recently decided to delete all of my pms. Until today there were two messages in my received total field that I could not view (a 2 corresponding to nothing). They were from a deleted user and were deleted as soon as I could view them, but I'm left wondering what the reason for this was.
Thanks.

I did keep backups over the years of all the databases when I was an administrator.. so I do have many cd's burned with backups, but no longer have any on my personal computer. I could care less about any messages stored on them and would never give anyone access to them.
People who conduct sensitive and/or illegal things through PMs should rethink how they do things, as no server on the internet is completely unhackable. I'd be more worried about some of the current people who have access to the Shroomery server than who has old backups of things.

Everyone IS at risk, but not because of myself.

WTF, isnt the pictures we can't delete a bigger security issue for us??? Aint you guys gonna do something about that?

Well, in theory, we could delete all pictures older than a certain date, like what's going to happen with PMs, but that would be very arbitrary and literally gut the message board -- there would be Red Xs everywhere. On the other hand, it would save tons of bandwidth, but I would advise against that...

Are you having troubles with particular pictures you posted in the past? I think there is another thread about this subject...

Mr Mushrooms, first up when emailing/PM'ing sensitive suff with folks, you learn/use PGP. If you did that from day dot then it wouldn't matter if the feds grabbed the server. Good going on getting folks to use it. http://www.overgrow.com/growfaq/1551

Another advantage of PGP is it will allow you to backup oodles of PM's and other data as a PGP'ed zips and go upload it to a cyber drive -- then it's not even on your PC taking space and above all it's secure.

As for the "pics deletion" need T0aD (and I agree btw), a self-destruct button too would serve as well. Last thing I would want to do is prove to the admins who I am, my full name, my address, my bust wrap sheet yadda yadda just so I can exit. All I'd ask in the worst case scenario is let me pull the pin quietly. They do at Overgrow, what gives here?
http://www.overgrow.com/edge/showthread.php?t=120492

On topic, PM's should be deleted, they safe guard you and your recipients. Shit, I haven't got one (1) person in the shroomery to use PGP yet. *sigh*. Slack. :frown:

Deleting pictures is a horrible idea, it would ruin so many old cultivation threads.
Best to not upload pictures you might not want to be connected too.

Anno, if you are worried about security risk, why not let users delete uploaded photos too?

ps. 300 megs is nothing in terms of storage space.

It's not my intent to belabor the point, but I agree. People tend to change their minds about things like pictures of schedule 1 drugs growing in their homes (albeit, it's their fault for ever posting them). Also, I'm sure there is a huge amount of space being occupied by silly/useless pictures. If it's a huge pain in the ass to change this, don't do it for me :wink:...don't really care, just understand.

1. No, it's not a joke. We prefer to think of it as satire.

2. It's not the 300MB of drive space, per se, it's the number of additional records on an otherwise over-taxed MySQL server.

3. The picture deletion discussion is in another thread in this forum, and as I indicated in that thread, we are looking into it.
