Deeper or wider?
    #4273446 -

So I am about to case the last of my PF jars.. and I wanted to know what people thought about the container size. Do you think that a smaller container with a deeper substrate will yield more... or a much bigger container but substrate pretty shallow? Or... put them all together and make one big, deep casing..?

So from Experience what do you guys think?

Sludge has it right. The deeper the substrate, the larger the fruits. The wider the deep substrate, the more fruits you'll yield.

It's a tradeoff. You want big fruits, go deep, you want more fruits, go wide. All in all, you shouldn't notice too much difference in final yeild. Good luck, though!

Go deep and wide. I wouldn't sacrifice depth or surface area, because when combined together, you'll see amazing results. The bigger base for mushrooms to draw nutrition from, the bigger yields you'll see.

Hey Diver,

If you DID have to sacrifice one or the other, which would you pick?

I like my bulk substrates to be 4" to 6" deep.

and use at least a 12" x 12" plastic dish pan.

Awesome update, damn that was quick...

Now for something on topic.

What depth would you recommend, i have heard 3-6 inchs deep. I personally was aiming for 4 inch substrate and 3/4 inch casing. What would be the best compromise between size and depth, without any sacrifice?

I'd say 4 is great, 5 is pretty deep...and anything more than that is probably un-necessary.

Mine are usually 1in thick...But Here lately i've been going for 4in...4in is way better IMO.

This thread has way too much sexual overtone. Let's get back on topic here people. Deeper and wider is better. But the motion of the ocean sets the mood.

Wow 6"? Is that ONLY for bulk.. or have you tried grains that deep as well? Is one 12x12 6" casing really going to be more than double two 12x12 3" casings? That would take a lot of pints...
So is that for grains as well.. I'm having postal problems with my poo...

I like to use 1 3/4-3 inches on all my stuff. I would take width over depth, easily.

I wouldn't do 6" of grain...that would be alot of grain.

4" to 6" of bulk substrate...like horse poo...hell yes!~

and I get larger fruits...I like mine big!~
