Casing- Why do we need to do it?
    #425587 -

most of the compost teks instruct you to mix the mycellium with the compost..allow it to grow a week and then case it with a 1/4 inch layer...this induces fruiting.

what is it about this "covering" that forces the mushroom to fruit? out on a pasture, this doesn't happen and the mushroom obviously fruits...

is a final casing really necessary?

no, it's really not necessary. but some say that it makes for bigger flushes: more surface area to grow from. it is just a layer to produce a stronger mycellium network and to add moisture to the substrate. hope this helps.

casings serve several purposes,
1.) to protect the colonized substrate from drying out
2.) to provide a humid microclimate for primordia formation and development
3.) to provide a water reservoir for the maturing mushrooms
4.) to support the growth of fructification enhancing microorganisms
(TMC, p 128-129)

in bulk runs, some mixtures of compost and spawn provide enough heat and moisture in themselves to not require a casing layer (like the db kit). some bulks like worm castings dry out quickly and can need a casing layer if not further supplemented (like with straw)- worm castings seem not to put off the heat that dung based composts do (when not using straw).

when trying to cultivate and control nature, you want to provide the optimum conditions- which is what the casing layer provides. in nature, optimum conditions are never met- fruits appear sporadically (fields dont have fruit all the time, etc.) when cultivating in an artificial enviro., you just want to give it all the help it can get :)
