mysterious poppy

well, obviously I planted it. I just don't remember when, and I can't figure out why it's significantly bigger than any others i've seen that i've planted thus far.

this particular one is right beside my front step, it very well may have been seeded when i took out my keys, it may have just fallen there. it's the south side of the house.

i found it while performing a long overdue lawn-mowing on my encroaching rainforest. it was getting so bad, my pug couldn't even shit on it.

so i thatched out the fall leaves, mowed the crabgrass, pulled up loads of ragweed and groundsel, and somewhere in a cluster of common groundsel was this solitary papaver somniferum. i watered and fed it today, hopefully it will really take off now. ive got like a few thousand growing in the backyard tho. ive thinned them out, that took HOURS of selective culling and heartbreak.

Same thing happened to me. I did have a bed prepared for them and I was going to get some seeds and grow some. Then I went outside the other day and see some already there somehow, about the same size as that one, and 2 really small buddies. I cast some seed around last summer and got nothing, and I think I threw some used up pods out in the yard too that summer. I dunno, it's a strange and pleasant surprise

Can poppy seeds that don't germinate in the summer stick around and grow the next spring? Maybe I should go check the other areas I cast seed in.

Nice to see people working real hard at singular insignifigant things. I have had NONE of my poppy seeds grow yet this year and I am PISSED.

I'm thinking i should have seeded out my field of poppies, although it is not my land, and it's kind of sketch being there for a long time. Hopefully farmer john doesn't realize all the poppies are there before i slice em. I'm hoping to get a quarterpound of seeds and of course a bunch of latex.

Just go out at night with a pair of scissors and cut off all the pods about 3 inches below the pod, then make tea, or even better opium tincture. You can boil the tea down to a goo and smoke it too, I'm pretty sure that's what you're supposed to do to have proper "cooked" opium. Really not a good idea to score the pods one night and then have to come back in the morning and scrape up all the raw opium, it would take a good hour for a decent sized field.
