My examples would not be valid to you, because I have a different definition of selflessness.

self-ish, is not equal to self, just as red-ish is not pure red, but similar to red. So something that is explicitly done for self interest is selfish, and something that only makes the doer pleased to know that someone had benefit doesn't count.
The pleasure that comes fro knowing that someone is more happy is indirect selfinterest

Right! The way we define it is the rub. :mushroom2:

Both make sense to me, but only if we use the same definition at all times.

Hmmm...example of selflessness...

How about organ donation (post-mortem)? No way to cash in on the gratitude or impress people with your good deed.

There is no self at that point so it doesn't qualify.

It's still an awesome thing to do though, I am donor.

I saw a show a long time ago about children in emergency life threatening situations who were saved by organ donation and I had it added to my DL the next time I had it renewed.

Why do you do it? Makes YOU feel good to help others? Enlightened self interest.

As I mentioned once, the new law in Croatia says that EVERYONE are donors unless they go to the doctor and sign some document that they refuse to donate, so I guess I'm a donor too

The downside of being a donor is that a doctor might let you die to get organs instead of do everything he can to help you

So it is only selfless if it is unpleasant??

My mother believes the same thing about donation. Why would a doctor want to save another patient more than he/she wants to save you?

This seems paranoid to the extreme!

No, if you read my other posts I state there is no selfless act. You always act according to your beliefs which are in your self interest. You dig. :mushroom2:

But the act of agreeing to be a donor must be accomplished while you are alive, and would therefore be selfless.

but myself doesn't have to turn it over until my self no longer exists.

Isn't it still selfish of me to want to keep my organs for myself until I don't need them anymore?

Did you hear about the Priest who chased the alter boy around the church and caught him by the organ? :mushroom2:

No, they are paid for performing their job. If they save you, you and your insurance company pay the bill. If you die, and you donate your organs, someone else (and their insurance company) pay the bill.

I think we need an alternate term for positive acts which primarily benefit others. If "selfless" does not work, because self-interest must be involved to motivate the act in the first place, then what about "altruistic"?

1 : unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others
2 : behavior by an animal that is not beneficial to or may be harmful to itself but that benefits others of its species.

but what about corruption?
Let's say there is a lack of organs and a big list of waiters, one of them pays a network of corrupt doctors to be first and get an organ ASAP, they do it all legal and with proper papers, but speed it up a bit by leaving you to die?
