casing size?
    #424007 - 10/13/01 09:38 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

a friend of mine has a fully colonized 1/2 pint jar of wheat berries. he wants to case them, what would be the optimal thickness? bigger surface with a thinner layer of substrate or smaller surface with thicker substrate. would be nice to have adults for halloween so time is also becoming a factor. any advise or good teks would be much appreciated.

It's gonna be tight for halloween. For a bit faster fruit - less casing layer, say about 1/2" of coco or whatever you are using. 1/2 pint jar is not very much for a casing, you might be better off just birthing and going with a cake. For casing I would go about 6" x 6" tray.

if you are not gonna spawn it, and you have enough colonized substrate, 2" might be *really* nice...

if you are skeptical about it, just go with one inch

and a half an inch to a full inch casing layer will work mighty fine...

my friend picked up some aluminum loaf tins. when spread out, the substrate layer should be nearly and inch thick. also picked up some coco coir. what is the recommended thickness of the top and bottom layers of that stuff? he has plenty of verm also. should he add some of that to the mix?

Yeah, that 6 X 6 is about right for 3 - 4, 1/2 pint cakes. For a single 1/2 pint you want a container about 4 inches in circumfrence. A 12 oz. plastic cup should work nicely.

a twelve oz. cup would be way to small there would not be any room for casing. isn't the reason for casing to provide more surface area and available moisture for fruiting.

my friend just cased his jar. for a container he used a round bowl with a apprx. 5 inch diameter. kind of neat because it has an oriental design on the side, very fitting for the cambodian (KS) strain growing inside. the substrate layer ended up being a generous inch thick. have enough room for almost an inch of top layer. as a side note, coco coir seems to be very cool stuff- holds an amazing amount of h2o.
