Need an ID for mushrooms found in NY
    #4202753 -

My friend and I recently went shroom hunting in a nearby forested area, while we were searching along the banks of a stream we came across a patch of these orangish/rustish mushrooms growing on woodchips in grass.

A. Habitat- upstate New York, was growing on woodchips in soil surrounded by grass
B. Gills- Dark brown, attatched
C. AVG cap and stem msrmnts: Cap: about 6cm diameter, Stem- about 10-14cm
D. Characteristics of stem: Grain is vertical, near cap color is lighter orangish tan, in middle dark brown, and as they started drying the bases of the stem are turning white. Hollow, thin.
E. Characteristics of Cap: Pale tannish orange, smooth, convex and on some a pointy thing in the middle of cap, spherical.
D. Spore print is a brownish color
G. The mushrooms dont really bruise
H. They are wet, and they smell like fresh store bought mushrooms, there are a couple smaller ones that dried and they smell a bit stronger, but worse.

nice description, unfortunately I can't think of a genus for them, maybe someone else can help more.

This link may be worth a look: http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/gilled_dark.html

40. Mushroom identifier meeting one or more of the following descriptors:

Easily frustrated
Without a microscope
Without access to technical mycological literature
Employed full-time outside of mycology

->Little Brown Mushroom (LBM) :wink:
that's about as good as I can do for this one.

definitely not active or edible though.

Without more details, we can't do much better than calling them LBMs. The obvious genera to guess are Galerina and Inocybe.

Happy mushrooming!
