why do people tend to only appreciate things when they are gone? Discuss.

That's a good question. Maybe it's because people tend to assume that when they have something, they have it for good. A foolish tendency to cling and assume it will stay.

That wasn't much of an answer but..this one is tough.

People grasp at things as if they are real and permenant. When things change, as is the nature of the universe, they suffer due to their clinging to what is impermenant. While they seemingly have whatever they are grasping onto, they take it for granted that things will always be this way. When things change people realize that what they had was not permenant, some people suffer and dwell on what they have lost, others feel the pain, accept the change, learn the lesson of not clinging to what is impermenant and move on.  :heart:

your evaluation of personal happiness usually doesnt include a past and a future, it is mainly a NOW assesment. The blinders of bliss dont usually let "what if's" ruin the party...

That was much more true in my youth. Now I tend to appreciate what I have now, and expect it to be gone and replaced by a totally different now at any moment.  :mushroom2:
