Death
    #5808181 - 06/30/06 11:58 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

...is the only consistant aspect of our lives. It is the only stable concept that can function as the foundation for our reality. The knowledge of it's certainty gives us a true perspective when considering the value of our acts.

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I agree, but the term and concept "death" is one that to me, is limited to living things (how can something that isn't alive die?). I think that 'impermanence', instead of 'death', expresses this the most effectively.

Making the noise "penicillin" is no substitute for actually taking penicillin.

Focusing on death too much can make a person morbid in thought. Being aware of the impermenant, interdepenent nature of all arising phenomena is one of the pillars of awareness.

Meditation on impermenance is also used as one of the core teaching in Buddhism as it is one of the four awarenesses.

Truth is subjective...an illusion only.

Obsession is always unhealthy, but keeping one's mortality in mind when making decisions or speaking is always good. It is a razor that removes pettiness.

It also produces neat artwork, in the case of Alex Grey.

Agreed. Death has inspired so much beauty that we should see it as a blessing. Without death there would be no beauty. Our impermanence makes colors brighter, sounds richer, and our emotions so much more intense. Without death all would be taken for granted. The "immortals" among us lose so much.

Indeed. Death/destruction is just as beautiful as birth/creation, IMO. In fact, without death/destruction, there could be no birth/creation! I have a deep respect for artists that realize that without destruction they could not create. Men like Hendrix who light their guitars on fire in honor and tribute to destruction.

Strange how people can be so emotionally attached and self-centered that they perceive death as being a very negative thing that's happening to them. Frankly, when I die, I want people to celebrate and have a grand old time!

I am with you on that 100% I don't desire death to overtake me, but I know without it the time I have is meaningless.

If you could get genetic treatment for dying of old age and most sicknesses... would you take it?

I would live longer...with no sickness, but without death or even a potential to die...no.
