Hi, I have been trying to work with agar for the first time. I have used pre made malt agar wich I warmed up, poor on 5 petridishes and pressure cooked for 20 minutes, then I inoculated the dishes with azures spores, 2 plates never showed any sign of anything, 2 plates got contamed with green mold, but one plate looks like this:
this white stuff is only on the top of the agar (with that I mean, if I look under the dish you cant see the mycelium (if this is myc), the mycelium looks more weaker than cubensis mycelium, i dont know how to describe it well (my english sucks) but it looks diffrent but it does look white. I hope the picture is ok enough

i would say its a 50/50 chance with your plates, your picture isnt clear enough. It loks too grey and doesnt show any charactoristics of mushroom mycelium. There is one spot in the top left of your pic where it looks like mycelium is growing up on top. But i cant tell from your pic. Here are 2 plates of azure mycelium, do your look like these

How long did it take until it looked like this? If it took like 14 days, it is probably mycelium.

That really does not look dense enough to be mycellium.

It took 6-7 days. however, its defently not mycelium, I opened the dish and touched something that remindet me of cotton candy more than anything else .
I will try again tho and have a question;
pressure cooking petridishes seems like an easy way to break them. I took the dishes in foil before I put them in last time but something tells me this way is far from good enough. But i wondering also,, why the hell do I need dishes., cant I just poor the malt agar into jars and use tyvek filter and stuff and just inoculate the spores on top of agar? will this work just as good. opinions please
