Re: Standing up for what is right [Re: Huehuecoyotl]

If you look within yourself you will find a moral compass. If you look upon it in an unbiased fashion, unclouded by your personal desires, you will see that it usually points in the direction of truth. Often, people allow their physical and psychological greed to cloud its face. At other times we may ignore it because others tell us to "lighten up" or "be cool". It is often hard to follow what you know is right when others allow themselves to overlook these truths out of self interest. When you know you stand on the path of truth your heart will tell you so. Let no other fork your path with deception or temptation even if all of your "friends" turn against you. Doing the right thing is never easy.

Are you sure we have a moral compass? When did we get it? And to what morality was it calibrated?

Indeed. Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber... all these people knew they were right. Some people need to tell their "moral compass" to shut the hell up.

"all these people knew they were right"
All of these people were, by my consideration, also insane. Throw the 9/11 air plane guys on in there as well. I think that anyone who willing attacks civilian targets with the intent to cause huge loss of life has lost the ability to properly excercise their judgement. Their moral compass is broken.

How are we to judge whose moral compass is functional and whose isn't? By whether you agree with them or not?

Easy...if they want to do things like genocide, blow up public buildings, poison water supplies, or hurt children and swear that they are morally correct they fail the test. I am willing to bet, though, that most people who engage in these terrible things have actually stopped listening to their moral compass out of self interest.

Those are examples, not a method. I'm asking for a method to determine whose moral compass is correct. How about more subtle issues, like who to vote for, or whether or not to go vegan?

Any free human should have a functional moral compass whether they listen to it or not. People suffering from mental disabilities may have blurred judgement. This is not science...it is ethics.

You are asking me to accept this as an axiom when you have offered no evidence. As such, I will treat such a claim the same as I would treat any claim of psychic powers or UFO sightings.

All I am saying is people should do what is right without allowing their self interest to become a factor. You have a problem with this simple idea...so should people NOT do what they think is right?

People should EXAMINE their beliefs about right or wrong rather than passively accepting them, just as they should do with any other beliefs.

I never said our values should be static...they should constantly evolve...that's a no-brainer.

Then we should not automatically trust our "moral compass."

No...our moral compass is constantly updating...like a real compass. You are missing the point here. I never said not to question...that is part of the evaluation process, but at some point a decision must be made as to the rightness of an action...that is when you take the reading off of the "compass"...either that or you suspend action on every activity and decision permanently. Decisions have to be made in order to act. I feel you are letting your personal dislike of my intensity affect your evaluation of my ideas. I do express my views on this forum, but I often pose them in provocative ways to invoke thought and make things more interesting hence my previous discussion of shotguns. It doesn't matter if you like my method or not; disagree or agree...don't nit pick at such a simple idea. That we should constantly evaluate our values in the light of their relevancy is such a no-brainer I did not address it....it is implied.

I modernized and traded in my moral compass for a moral GPS.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

I stuck with the old technology...there are still way too many technophobic members of our society.

Very true, indeed. I think it's a good measure of a person and his "moral compass" in how he/she treats others. At least that's my take on it....
