Without any info on other countries readily available my take would be this: I doubt it would be possible to work less than 30 hrs. per week in any country and still maintain a decent standard of living. If you did manage this, it would equate to about 2 hrs. less per day (considering an average U.S. work week of 40 hrs.). Over the years it would obviously add up, however I notice that if I happen to get out of work early on some days, I'll spend the extra time on the couch.

I think it would be better for you to gain a new skill to increase your marketability so you could switch jobs. There's always a work VS. pay scale, so that yes, you may work only 30 hrs. a week in a different country, but you may be apt. to miss the spoils of American Life.

I remember my econ teacher telling me about this. He said Americans tend to work longer hours that Europeans but Europeans work harder in the shorter time that they work (so it almost evens out). However, Europe's GDP hasn't been too strong... or something. I don't know, I got a C in that class

You could move to Europe for less hours or you could just find a job in America that'll fit your needs, I'm sure they're out there!

Strange, and I always thought you lived in Germany

There are no further requirements.

I can speak Japanese but not so well. I can barely read it and I can't write it at all. You do not need to speak Japanese to get in. I couldn't when I first started. They do like to hire younger people, especially right out of college but it's not a steadfast deal breaker. How old are you? If you're really interested I can send you some links on how to go about it.

Some of yall are definitely in Fantasy Land. Setting up a new life overseas takes a lot of planning. You can't just show up in some country and expect to work less and achieve a higher standard of living than back home. The only realistic way to go about it is to line up a job before you get there. In that case you should know exactly what your job description is and how many hours per week you'll be expected to put in. If you just show up you're going to be on the bottom of the barrel. In order to get by in a foreign country you need to be able to do something that the local people can't do, especially if you can't speak the language. The EU countries favor other Europeans so that's going to make it even harder for Americans. There's much more visa hassle for the employer if he hires a Yank so why would he? It's a great thing to travel but expecting it to make your life easier is naive.

One way to increase the amount of free time you have is to save your money and then go to a third world country where you can really stretch out your dollar. For example, you can get a hotel room for a dollar a day in India.

There's no easy solution. I also find the forty hour work week oppressive. Especially if the job is really exhausting. When I was younger I tried to deal with it by looking for jobs that had very little supervision or just needed someone to be there but not much else. In college, I worked as a janitor. Obviously, the pay was shit, but I could do other things while working. Two key points, I could wear a walkman at work so I could get some music time in. Also, I cleaned the buildings while they were still empty so I found some hiding places where I could study. That helped conserve time.

After that I found a job caring for disabled people. They usually didn't need assistance at night so I worked graveyard. I usually managed to get about six hours of sleep in at work. That really opened up a lot of free time during the day.

That is an excellent idea! Right now I have about 6 grand saved up in the bank... i bet i could live like a king for a year in indonesia with that cash...

This sort of situation would be nearly ideal! I say nearly, only because 6 hours of sleep isnt enough.. haha... if you could get in 10 hours of sleep, then THAT would be ideal!

Oh yeah, six G will go a long way in SE Asia. If you stay in one place you can really stretch it out. Indonesia is pretty strict though. I've never been there but I'm sure it's really cool. Getting back to India. I spent three months backpacking around India, Nepal and Bangladesh. I was eating good meals and sleeping in a decent bed for around ten bucks a day. At that rate you're talking 300 bucks a month. Third class trains and buses are dirt cheap. I think SE Asia is just slightly more spendy. In Nepal, weed was dirt cheap. Hiking in the Himalayas we actually passed through fields of it, swear to God. I gave this kid five bucks and he came back with his hands full of weed, no baggie even. I had to tell him I didn't want so much. It was low quality but after awhile it got a buzz going. Man, those are good memories.

I am 25 - out of college for 2 years now. I taught for 1 year and then there were cut backs in the education budget. We were all laid off, basically.

I know no Japanese other than how to say hello, good morning, and thank you.

I would definitely like to hear about the opportunities. Thanks!

40 hours a week and you bitch?!?! HAH! I got a buddy who works in Texas, 115 hours a week, LOVING IT. A friend who works at Per Se (Restaurant in NYC Thomas Keller), 60 hours a week, shit pay, LOVING IT. Me soon to be working about 60 a week, decent pay, and soon to be LOVING IT.
It's all 'bout loving the work you do.
Of course I do plan on skipping the country to Asia to find a job if I can.
Course I'm in the 'highly skilled' category, straight out of school (gotta love this industry), with friends who can get me a gig in vietnam or london.

My advice, since I've always wanted to do it and plan on doing it within the year:
GET THE FUCK UP OUT.
This place fucken sucks. Get out, vote for hillary in '08 by absentee ballot, enjoy life, and hope for the best.
By the way, I've been to India, and expecting to find a room for $1 a day is absurd (try 5-10 for something almost liveable, 1$ doesn't exist except in LARGE towns (bombay, delhi, calcutta, chennai, etc.)). In Cambodia, Laos, yes. India is MORE expensive than SE Asia.

Cheers,
Pras

Hmmm... I found Bombay expensive but managed to get a dorm room for 3 bucks a day (I think). Calcutta was about two bucks a day with a shared toilet down the hall. Near Bodagyha (sp) I stayed at a monastery for about 50 cents a night. SE Asia might be cheaper. I'm not sure. I found dirt cheap places but you had to have your own sheets to keep off the bed bugs. I actually did get scabies. It was a few years ago. I never had a connecting toilet or a hot shower.
