TiT Setup problems, wtf
    #4174497 - 05/14/05 02:26 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I know, your thinking this guy must be dumb to screw up a TiT setup, but some help would be cool. SO heres what I have.

The first time I did it, I put water in then the tub, should ahve known what was coming, so now I put both tubs in and put water down the sides, but the fuckin tub keeps floating up.

Here you can see, I put some budnles of paper and a tub of kitty litter in and I hardley got any water on the sides. SO my question's are, does the water have to be on the sides, 2, when I hopefully do get this fuckin thing going, Is it alright to cover the tub with the jars in it with the lib or cover the entire thing with a towel/

Nathan

drill some holes in the lips of the tubs and put some wire ties on them to hold them together before you fill it up

Cover w/ lid, Wash a blanket and use it...

And you can use plastic ties to hold it down...

Drill holes in the lip on both and secure w/ plastic ties

i use these small bungie ties. rope might work too. i wouldnt bother trying to weigh it down, but thats just me. and yea i think it is important to have water on the sides.

Water on the sides isn't important IMO...

No-one has really stopped to think about it...

The water is heated in a central location, so the water on the sides isn't heated b/c it doesn;t move...So therefore w/o a water pump, it won't matter...The sides will get only so warm...Just something to think about....

Exactly. I have never used anything to pull the top tub into the bottom. All of my tubs float. I have some good humidity in the top container and temps are a constant 86 degrees. This setup works awesome.

My colonizing WBS quart jars are usually done in 7-10 days.

A pump is not necessary to heat the water on the sides of the TiT. The heat will travel through all of the water by conduction. If the conduction of heat through water were not possible, the heater within the water would do nothing at all. Of course the water near the heater will probably be slightly warmer, and the water near the edges will be giving off heat energy to the cooler surrounding air.

Is it necessary to submerge the inner tub? Your incubator will probably work fine without it, but being surrounded by the water will allow it to heat up faster. They tend to lose all of their heat when you open them to look at your jars, so faster heating is beneficial. I just put 50 lbs of weights in the bottom of mine to keep it somewhat submerged in the water.

Oh, by the way, take those tubs back and get some dark colored ones. Why worry about a third vehicle to keep the light out when you can let the tub do it for you.

That's not true at all in my experience. The mycelium is already at temps slightly higher than the tub. Checking your jars for 3-5 minutes is not going to drop your temps that much. You pick up a jar, shake it if needed, and put it back in the incubator.

I do agree that the incubator will lose some heat, but temps will be in check within 30 minutes of closing. The temp drop in the mycelium is the concern here and that will not be affected to any great degree.

My point was, Pending on you environment, the water will be cooler on the sides, Conduction only allows for so much heat...

If your house is always running at a cool 68F, then the sides will be significally cooler than where the heater is located...

Conduction doesn't keep the temp. up through-out the entire incubator...

When the bottom is 84F, the sides will be about 78 or so, once again, pending on the outside conditions...

But most people don't have to worry about this considering that their house is always above 70F (or more)...

, gl w/ ur tub man
