Fruiting taking too long, lack of mostiure. Ways to fix the situation.
    #4145009 - 05/07/05 02:38 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I fruited my cakes in my perlite chamber about a week ago. The humity is high, temp low, and light on. But I icked up one if my cakes and it was pretty dry, Can I dunk them and then somehow cold shock them to induce fruiting? Or are those steps too late?

Can you tell if they're forming primordia?? One week is not that long, they could take up to another week to pin. Sure you can dunk but that will set you back by another week. I say let them do their thing, once they are done with the first flush pick your mushrooms, clear all pins off of the cake, then dunk with distilled water an a capful of h2o2.

A lot of growers dunk cakes at birthing to replace moisture lost during the colonization cycle. The dunk is done in cold water in the refrigerator to lessen the chances of bacteria taking over your cake during the dunk. This is not cold shocking. Cold shocking is necessary for cold weather edibles that only fruit in the fall. Tropical species such as cubensis that fruit From Texas to Florida during the spring, summer and fall do not benefit from a cold shock. If you picked up the cake and could tell from the weight that it is very light, I'd suggest a dunk. Otherwise, patience is the key. A week after exposing to fruiting conditions is not too long to wait. Good luck.

Make sure there getting some dark too. It's very important to let them grow in the dark. 12/12 lighting

I never said that it was cold dunking dude, Where did you get that from???

this was in response to Roger Rabbit.

And cray, dark is not really important for fruiting. I have fruited many casings and cakes on 24 hour light.

It seems to me that mushrooms grow faster in dark. I did a little test to see if this true so one week I put the light on 12/12 the mushrooms matured just at the end of the week. and last thursday some pins started showing up and this time I only gave them about 18 off and 6 on and this morning I had fully matured mushrooms! fat suckers too
