Early Fruiting
    #346493 - 06/22/01 03:59 AM (23 years, 3 months ago)

I have two PF style jars (my first two, that is) that have been sitting on my windowsill for about a month. Neither appear to be 100% colonized (more like 85%), but they have just begun fruiting. I think that I may have used a little too much water in each jar, and the substrate seems kind of goopey around the bottom of the jar. Is it possible that the light is making this happen? It has been warm (80's) where I live and the jars are sitting in a north-facing window, so they aren't directly exposed to the sunlight. Why is this happening and what should I do now? Is it time for a birthday?

They should be kept in the dark until fully colonised

The same thing happened to me recently. I put the jars, with lids off, into my terrarium. I had shrooms invitro and growing outside the jar as well.

They don't have to be kept in the dark to colonize.

And yours are fruiting because it's time to! You've had the jar sitting there for a month waiting for it to finish colonizing but it will never totally colonize that cake because it is to wet. Excess moistutre has pooled at the bottom and that area won't colonize. You could've turned the jar upside down to try to rectify the situation but if they are already pinning, then birth.

I had a jar that was about 40% done and it had about 16 pins on it so i just brithed it. I scraped off all the vermacualite i could and right now it is showing better yields then any of my 100% colonized jars. One shroom on it is at 5 inches right now and the next closest one is at 1 inch and thats on the same cake.......all the other cakes have small pins and thats it.
