ID poppy variety?
    #4128875 - 05/03/05 07:29 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Is there anyway to identify a poppy variety from a picture, or do you actually have to determine it by subtler features... like seeds, leaves, and stems. I'm looking for expert advice, what do I need to know?

You mean, differentiating between Giganteum, Turkish Giants and the like? I think you can only tell by the flower color and pod size. I'm no expert, just my 2 cents..

Those look like very good ones to me. But maybe 'purple' pods will be better? Both purple and those would be good, no doubt.
The question is do you buy small ones cheaper or large ones more expensively.

I am under the impression large pods will have higher percentage concentration of 'goods' for tea as compared to the small pods.
I'm also under the impression that the tint of the pod, perhaps a darkpurpilish tint can mean higher content of goods?
If this is a rumor and you have experience with different pods please say.
I've only experienced the 'Turkish variety, and it was mighty well.
I'm wondering if different varieties of poppies produce different concentrations of the morphine's much like some weed is up and some is down.

Apparently these aren't the ones to look for. And the authority of this also said that purplish pods were the kind to find.

Are there any active varities that are purple? Or is this misleading information?

Look closely at the coloration of the pods in the picture you posted... See how it gets darker at the top? I am pretty sure this indicates opium, and is a feature that is not found in 'ortamental poppies'

the darker the color under the thin outer layer of skin indicated better content.
Think about it: When you scrape a pod, you scrape it thin. All this liquid opium flows out, and is a dark color when compacted( which creates smokeable opium in its purest form.
So, if the pods are not scraped, all this opium( that darkens when is dries) is trapped under the thin pod coating and can be seen clearly.

i dont think so.....smokeable opium in its purest form would be cooked, not raw......but im not to sure on the color thing either..

The only purple pods that I have seen pictures of are not active. Purely ornamental; these pods are not active. That is not to say that active purple pods don't exist, just that I haven't seen them.

Anyone know of an active purple podded variety?
