opium poppy varieties
    #2752052 - 06/01/04 04:18 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Just trying to learn about this plant. I know Papaver Somniferum is the main type, is this because it produces the highest alkaloid content? I'm specifically interested in Papaver Giganteum and its alkaloid content.

Anyone know?

thats right thumbup:

And Indian Raj, China White, Taz, Turkish commercial, Dutch-a1,hens and chicks, persian white etc etc etc....theses are all Papaver somniferum strains.

To learn the real difference beteeen poppies I suggest you check out this Mothershabooboo

http://www.nansnook.com/~archives/tek/poppy.htm

this will let you see what the "bunk" poppies, corn , oriental etc look like.

The opium poppy wether its persian , or indian raj, will have little details that are different and once you know them you can always spot a poppy, like for instance, for "good" poppy has a fuzzy crown, this is what the oriental has, and good poppys are smooth and hairless(with the exception being hens and chicks , but the hairs are thin and on the back of the leaves.

Poppys will have no hair on thier stems and will have a glossy whiteish look all over.

also.....

"P. somniferum plants will have their leaves arranged along the stem of the plant, rather than basal leaves, and the leaves and stem will be 'glabrous' (hairless). "
