I have tried several casing tek's and I have had contamination problems with all, so, I guess my question would be is there a casing tek out there that wont contaminate after the first flush? The sea of shroom tek put out a lot of fun guys, but the cups contamd after the first flush, I have also tried using potting soil, verm, and peat moss, and those contamd before anything really popped up. Please help, I have become real frustrated with casing.

are you letting the cakes *fully* colonize? (inside and out). its odd for casings to contaminte right after the first flush (not that its not possible, just not common)... it seems to me that the contaminant might be in the substrate and when you case (you didnt mentioned what ingredients did you used) you just pass them on to the casing layer... another try at this and it might be that you are using casing materials without pasteurizing them... if thats the case, either give it a pillow bath for an hour and a half, or in the bake in the oven for an hour an a half @ 150oF.... or nuke in the mike for about 8 minutes.... make sure everything its clean... even you and your hands.... thats my 2 cents...

I'd doubt that is was a contaminant in the casing if you got a good first flush. Even if it were totally sterile when you applied it, it wouldn't be after the first flush was harvested. What did you do after the first flush? If you leave any shrooms or pins, no matter how small, on the casing you are asking for trouble. When you harvest, harvest the lot - every single shroom. Have a hard look at the casing and make sure. Patch any holes or thin parts with fresh casing. If required scrape off all the casing and re-cover with fresh casing.

So, I need to remove all of them after the first flush, would the spores that dropped make a difference, I am going to scrape off the old casing layer and apply a new one, I make my cakes with brf/verm. I followed the sea of shroom exactly, and I saw a diff tek with potting soil, that was a bad one. I know I'm always sterile, I clean everything and use lysol liberally, but I didn't know about the top layer becoming dirty after the first flush. thanks a lot. I will try with my new cakes that are ready to be harvested.

What color is the contam you speak of? Try coco fibre people say it works great even without sterilization.

cobweb mold and that green crap. I hate it. I have heard of coco fiber working really well, I found a supplier, I just have to wait for the cash flow to get a little better.
