McKenna: Newton or just horeshit

I just listened to a McKenna lecture including a presentation of his timewave-zero-theory. At one point he himself remarked that either he was the new Newton or it was just complete horseshit - there?s no inbetween.
Now, afaik the theory has been proved wrong. So, is the whole theory worthless? I?m not able to comprehend the mathematics behind it but it seems quite bizarre that his key figure was so wrong. I guess if it wasn?t for McKenna there wouldn?t be the mushroom culture as we know it today.
Personally I?m convinced that 2012 will be a very remarkable year. Not because of mayan calander but rather because of the mushroom experience. There will be point of know return, as they say...
edit: and tell your board-sw i?m not a friggin noobie - right?

I love Mckenna! But no one IMO is going to give us the final truth. He had his theory's. Some will turn out to be right for a time. Some can be "proved" wrong today. It's his spirit that I love. His good nature and his willingness to be just human and not right all the time. Also his courage as an explorer. This is his real and best contribution.

Mckenna was a brilliant man. Personally, I do not understand the Timewave Zero theory nor do I put much stock into it. I am more into his Food of the Gods-esque work/research/thoughts - you know, human evolution, the role of entheogens throughout time, how entheogens should be used, etc.
I have a video I downloaded called Timewave Zero in which he explains the theory in very broad language. I understand what he was trying to say, but in order for me to agree/disagree I would need to understand the mathematics involved. Considering that I am not math-minded at all (I have trouble with basic arithmetic sometimes), I do not know nor do I have an opinion. Too many of us believe/disbelieve without actually knowing the subject.
Who disproved Timewave Zero?

You are from Iceland? I had a neighbor who was from Iceland (I?m from Germany). I also got to have a holiday over there to visit them (in 97) - a really nice place to say the least.
@McKenna: I meant one theory in specific, the timewave-zero theory. The point is just, if its plain wrong , i guess its not worth it to spend much time on it anymore.

i just found this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2972781&Main=2966063
so it seems its not necessarily proven wrong but rather has a (minor?!?) flaw in it.
it seems strange though, that it hasn?t gained any major interest in the public.

M. was brave and bright but just stoned wrong about a lot of stuff; for me he is the epitomy of a type of psychonaut, and that is valuable to our history.
I don't see anything from his story that is uniquely worth emulating or any theories worth repeating from him (especially anything about 2012), but he is as interesting, let us say, as aleister crowley, or ayn rand, who have pressed their faces into our history of human mind space.

I tried to listen to McKenna in those online audio-tapes, but damnit it was hard.
He just spouts shit that is not backed up by anything. No science, no philospophy... just pure psychoblabble.
No wonder the psychedelic movement never took off, their whole philosophy was based on the zero-substance-theory.

Examples? Are you saying that Soma was not a Psilocybe? Are you an archaeologist who can dispute his theories that were abundant in sources? Ever read Food of the Gods?

I was unaware that Mckenna was attempting to ignite some sort of drug movement. In fact, he was a proponent of what Huxley and the early LSD psychological researches supported: entheogens in the hands of the gifted and influential where the substances would be respected and within a ritualized setting - not some mass Children's Crusade like what Timothy Leary attempted.

Maybe I judged him too soon, I will look up Food of the Gods before I jump to anymore conclusions.

i don't claim to understand his timewave theory very well, but to me it just seems a bit arbitrary. if you look at the universe and work from base principles (a less arbitrary, more logical method), you get a different result.
mathematically, its a beautiful theory, but its not a scientific theory.

McKenna and his book Food of the Gods, has put many drugs into perspective. Mushrooms for accutness of the hunting tribes allowing them to hunt better. Marijuana as being solely the creative edge in people's minds. Look at all the artists that smoke marijuana. All drugs lead to a creative edge.

"McKenna and his book Food of the Gods, has put many drugs into perspective"
You mean took them out of perspective with fanciful assumptions.

Seems to me a classic case of scientific fashion..
