I read this post and thought it was interesting.
http://www.overgrow.com/edge/showthread.php?threadid=55859
Basically it talks about how some digital cameras ...well here's a segment of the post...
"Privacy Question: Do digital cameras or scanning software give up any personal warranty information that might be hidden in the jpeg file? If so, can this be disabled or removed from the file? "
Now being that many people here post pictures. It would be really bad if those pictures could be used against you. So for what its worth.... there it is.
"Steganography is the art of hiding information in ways that prevent its detection. Though steganography is an ancient craft, the onset of computer technology has given it new life. Computer-based steganographic techniques introduce changes to digital covers to embed information foreign to the native covers. Such information may be communicated in the form of text, binary files, or provide additional information about the cover and its owner such as digital watermarks or fingerprints. This paper explains steganography, provides a brief history, describes how steganography is applied in hiding information in images, and surveys a few steganography software applications for processing images."
Any thoughts on this? I'm interested to know if pictures can be traced. I know about steganography but thats more on the other end of encrypting.

Well, its certainly all possible in the purest technical sense, and both corporations and govt have shown a frightening disregard for personal privacy, but I doubt that any digicams embed a serial number into their pictures. The main reason why I doubt they would is that I cant think of much consumer benefit to such a feature (Ive never heard of a camera with the extra special bonus feature of being able to absolutely be sure that your camera took a certain picture at least ;) Scanner software falls under same category.
Also remember, that even if it does embed identification, theres only a couple of ways of linking you with that camera/software - A) you send in your warranty card and willingly give away your personal info like a good little consumer; or B) The Man has physical possession of your camera, in which case, you're probably really screwed anyways.
Its much much easier to simply track IP addresses of people who post pictures. Especially with AOL and Earthlink (that we know of so far) bending over and letting the FBI install spyware in their network operation centers.
Paranoia is healthy.

there are hundreds of bits of information in jpegs (and more or less in other formats) that i can't account for and don't have the software to acertain. maybe someone with the appropriate programing software can examine this question.
