Paranoia? Here?s paranoia for all you IE5 users

When my computer gets knocked offline by a power failure it goes thru the usual ?check files? bit. As it is doing this I notice that it lingers on some files more than others. By hitting the ?More info? button I can hesitate the program so I can write down the file names:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\CONTENT.IE5\WZSFKJY7
Six more the same with endings of:
41I3WDIV
ILQEFSFI
CD89Y5U7
E12FGHIJ
LLQEFSFI
ODEFGPEN
When I searched them up they contained close to a thousand bits of images, web pages and messages. One of the files contained a web page at msn.com. It had a weird numeral made up of dots followed by ?area?.
I figured that it was a method of polling the public in order to get a better understanding of how to market stuff. Everytime a file gets 1000 bits it would transfer them to the msn page sometime I was online. When I tried to delete all these files the computer suggested that it would not work without them. But I did anyway, knowing I could fetch them from the re-cycle bin should I need them. The computer works fine without them.
I feel like a dossier on what I do online is being compiled.
And whats with all these ?cookies?. Everytime I go to a some sites they give me cookies. Open up your cookie file and see how many cookies you have. I found I could delete all of them except the two paypal ones. And the computer is working faster it seams with out all that excess baggage. I put a short cut to the cookie file on the desktop and several times a day I clear it out.
I?m not really computer literate; Am I being overly paranoid?

Yeah, cookies are a pain in the TOOCH!

MSN, AOL, all the big names use cookies for marketing purposes. The shame of it is that the definition of a "cookie" is hard to define. Some companies make cookies that are almost like Trojans (Trojans are a virus that automatically sends info from your machine to someone elses).

Anywho, the best way to defeat cookies is.

1. When you install your Operating System, use a series of numbers for you computers name. TONS of programs rely on your computer name to gather information. And if you register/buy new programs, register them in the name of your computer. If you ever have problems and need to contact the software vendor, just give them the number that the program is registered to. Don't let these software companies that you NEED to register with a name. If they don't allow numbers in the "Name Feild"...just put - AAAA

2. Get a few fake email address. Many sites like Macromedia.com and other that want you to "register for free" only do that so you give them your email address. From there they can find out a good deal about you. Thnigs ranging from where you live, to how much you're online, etc...
Get a fake email address and have all non personal email sent there.

2. Get a program like "evidence eliminator" It will automatically wipe all out cookies, temp files, and other goodies that are left on your machine from internet sites. Many cookies are timed. Meaning that they won't send information back to their originating server for a few days, few weeks, maybe even a few month. The longer they can collect information, the more reliable their "marketing statistics" will be.

3. I can't say this enough.....
ENCRYPT ENCRYPT ENCYPT ENCRYPT ENCYPT YOUR DATA. Anyone can learn a few simple networking techniques and call themselves "a hacker". But go find someone who can hack into an encrypted file and then come see me:) Most hackers can't hack through an encrypted file. So if there's anything that you don't want ANYONE to see, encrypt it. Use a program like PGP http://www.pgp.com and try it out.

Ive seen similar numerical filenames at "fuckmicrosoft.com" have you checked them out there? they talk about how, microsoft keeps a list of every site you visit, the cookies you receive and a copy of all you email. fuckmicrosoft has an article of removing it all, aswell as finding and reading it.

Hi,
There are alot of programs like "evidence elminator" but the nice thing about EE is that it will clean your machine, then it will shut down Windows, then restart it in DOS mode and clean out files that other ways can't be cleaned or deleted while windows is running.

Its not bad:) And no I don't work for the company, its just a good program. If you're interested in this kind of thing, do a search for "sypware". Basically its just a small program thats packaged up with bigger programs that will connect you to a companies servers and tell them information about you. Its like a legal trojan horse.
