Gas exchange for jars?

Exactly how much oxygen does the mycelium need to grow? My gerbil inoculated 8 days ago and after 3 days they germinated but haven't grown much if at all since. They have been incubating in my closet under a heating mat that keeps it around 85-90 degrees with the lids tight and tape still on holes. Maybe it is like the saying: A watched pot never boils. But i am worried cuz they haven't had significant growth in 5 days! Thanx

You *may* have baked the substrate with the heating pad. I have no problems with mycelium growth and I've never used any type of heating element. Mycelium will usually grow just fine with normal house temperatures.

Also, I usually the leave the holes covered until about 50-75% colonized to prevent contaminations. It seems like everyone does something different.

I had the same problem with a large tupperware of verm & BRF. After a week the mycelium stopped. I then cracked the lid and have been fanning everyday (1" dry verm on top). I know this can contam, but not so far (2.5 weeks in). The Mycelium has gone crazy growing ever since. I would not recomend taking the lids off, but I would uncover the holes.

thanx, what i was thinking of doing is spraying lysol antibacterial spray all around and let it settle. then open the jars and fan them a little. they have the upper contam dry verm barrier so they should be alright. Would n e one say that it is a bad idea to replace the lids with like 3 dryer sheets or coffee filters? or maybe replacing the tape with som filters over it. oh well i don't think i baked the shit although one night while my friend was stoned and turned up the juice on the heater hoping to give the shit a "jumpstart". the temp never went past 95 but i about shit my pants when i realized what he had done. oh well thanx all
