Wanting to try WBS or popcorn...questions
    #4027677 - 04/07/05 05:47 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I have had 6 failed rye attempts, reasons are uncertain. I have tried numerous suggestions from people on this forum. Basically, I am giving up on it for awhile.

I am wanting to try something a bit easier, popcorn or wbs.

I have a bit of experience in cakes and casings and sterilization.

My question is, of the 2 substrates, which would you recommend? What tek would one generally use? I have read a couple, but not certain which one is better/easier.

Thanks in advance.

From what ive heard, rye has a generally higher success rate than wbs or popcorn....I wouldnt reccomend popcorn as a substrate, normally its used to spawn. Give WBS a try but make sure you soak for at least 18 hrs. If you are going to simmer after this, make sure you ARENT BOILING, and I wouldn't do it for very long. Many would say you dont even need to simmer, and doing so only increases your risk of popped grains. Also, make sure you strain the WBS VERY WELL before PCing, or you will have too much moisture. There shouldnt be any excess water on the outside of the grains.

use wbs, it easier to work with then rye, which contams easily, and produces more then popcorn.
Dont worry aout simmering, soaking or any of that shit. Just put some in a jar at a 3:1 ratio seed:water and pc it at 15 psi for an hour. You will be fine. its a piece of cake

Any certain wbs I should use? I read that sunflower seeds are bad.

So I am thinking about 3 cups wbs and 1 cup water per quart. I assume I shake it well after PC'ing.

Inoc with 2.5 cc's as per the rye tek.

Does this sound appropriate?

About how long do 1 quart jars take to colonize?

Look up 6T's WBS tek; never fails. As someone else mentioned, there is no need to simmer WBS. Just soak it in water (24 hours or so), drain it well, load and PC.

Sunflower seeds are not harmful; leave them in. It's amazing how this type of misinformation takes on a life of it's own.

what happens if u PC for more than 1 hour. I did some WBS jars and PC'd for about 1.5 hours. Could this have somehow dried the jars out?

No. I've been pc'ing for 90-105 minutes for almost 10 years now. With a 99% success rate I might add.

you just put 3:1 WBS to water ratio into the jars and PC'd. No soaking or simmering?

I was thinking about trying this next time, 3 cups WBS and 1 cup water per jar.

Hmmmmmm. Sounds scary to me. 24 hr. soak time, no simmering. Drain for an hour minimum in a collander and pc for 90-105 minutes @ 15psi. DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just did some WBS with an 18 hour soak, 40 min. drain, and 95min PC. They seem to be comming along very slow. I think it's because i had them at 70 for about 1.5 weeks, and just recently got them at 80-82.

2 hours pc time @ 15 psi. Drain time, 1 hour in a collander. 7 days and almost done.

if you want a good and new/up to date look for:
SOAKING WBS - GRAINS & TIMES - FINAL ANSWER by Agar

afoaf used it, and worked like a charm. just remember to soak 20-23h (afoaf had about 30 germinated seeds in 5lb). No need to simmer, but you MUST buy a screen, or something that you can SPREAD the soaked seeds on, so they drain properly (NO DRIPS PERIOD)! jar,pc,inoc, grow, enjoy!

I wish i knew how to make hyperlinks. Could someone link that Agar post, and also link a "how to make hyperlinks on Shroomery". Thanks

and shake the shit out of whatever your cookin as soon as your PC has been relieved of pressure... i actually like to do it twice now

and honestly i think you'll have to do some experimenting to find the optimal water ratio for your seed, but a 3:1 ratio is a good place to start, i would also recomend (to be more specific) for 1/2 pints, 35mL water and 70mL wbs, GL
