It could be rust. Then again, it could be a contamination. We cant do much help without a picture. The contamination forum probably knows more about this, check them out.

Even if it's rust, cut out the area showing the orange color. Rust can harbor contaminants as well. Then spray the area with a solution of water and peroxide, with a ratio of 5:1.

there is a good chance that your substrate was supersaturated when you innoculated. I have found that when orange and only orange appear it is a case of too much water. be safe and remove it though, then h2o2 treatment to be mucho safe

is it just an orange spot, or is it a liquid beady like thing? if it's a liquid it's possible that it's a pheremone released by the myc., in either case it's bad. i believe i've read it realeases them when it's been in the jar too long.

it was a large orange blotch which was also on the paper towel that i had the cake sitting on..I cut away the mycelium that was affected by it, and then moved the cake to a different part of the aquarium.. the paper underneath is all orange. weird, huh? i'm not going to throw it out yet, as I just saw my first primordia, and i'd like to see if i can make it. is this safe?
