Dreams
    #374255 -

Very simple question here ---

What do you think dreams are? Where do they come from, why do we have them?

If there is any specific, experiential reason that you believe as you do, what is it? If you just believe that because you believe it, that's cool too.....wondering what people's thoughts will be.....

dreams are our mind working purely with no outside contact, when you are sleeping you are cutoff from most of your senses in the real world, "your life" such as auditory visual, smells, tastes, feelings etc, everything you experience is created from your mind. I dont know what that means and it is in no way an answer to your question

somehow, my thoughts are more insane than the mind they spawn from

Dreams are hallucinations manifesting thermselves out of thre subconscious mind. Imagine dreams as experiential Cliffs Notes.

A dream is a review of the occurence of events and feelings that you have accumulated throughout an extended period of time (though dreams most often adress the day/night at present first before diverging offwards to more broadly oriented realms). The more pressing and weighty the issues (suvch overwhelming feelings of anxiety, dread or exuberance), the more likely the issues or associated events will be reiterated during sleep . Dreams seem to be a method by which the subconscious communicates these reoccuring themes that rise up in our lives (and we fail to adequately deal with consciously) to the consciousness of the individual. Using abstract association and metaphor, dreams try to present to us a dense tapestry of the occurences of our daily lives in a way that can be quite illuminating if looked at from the perspective of learning.

If one wishes to attempt to 'decode' the metaphor of a dream, all that must occur is that you focus on any confusing bit (say: The Monkey in the Tuxedo) and simply ask yourself honestly: 'what in the world could this mean?'. Usually the first conclusion and association you make with the symbol is the correct one. The first step though, is accepting that the dream may have some underlying meaning for you to find (I hesitate to suggest to anyone that they purchase 'dream dictionaries' because one's own associations and personal metaphors are so highly subjective. But I will not say that these books are always wrong. They merely give one a very mono-cultural reference.).

These have been my experiences. Take them or leave them.

I just came across a thought i had several times when i read this. dreams are allways such a nice experience but i dont dream really often(or i dont remind them when i wake up). is there any method which helps to trigger dreams? I'm not asking for highly spiritual or new age things because you must believe in them to be succesfull.

Vitamin B6, calea Zacatechichi, or simply intending to remember your dreams when waking as you go to sleep.

I keep a journal of my dreams that I write in every morning as I wake up. I find that I dream most nights, but unless I write down my dreams whilst I still remember them then within half an hour or so of waking I forget they ever happened.

I have taken calea Zacatechichi but I felt no effect, do you recommend taking it a certain way? (i just made tea) and it was nasty : )
But for dream recolection the secret for me, is as soon as I wake up don't move stay still and try to remember it takes some practice but it works.

I know what you mean about the tea being nasty. It's so bad, that I simply cannot drink it anymore. Calea leaves can also be effectivly smoked, which is better, but still not plesant.

Dale Pendel spoke of an experimental calea liquor in pharmako/poeia, but in his experiements found it to be inactive. He hypothesises that the nasty taste and activity are either caused by the same substance, or by some similar compounds which are difficult to separate.

Your mind requires constant stimulation and activity to stay functional. Dreams are simply your mind amusing itself by replaying random and mixed memories, living out fantacies or as some would beleive, receiving and coding messages intended to teach you of the future, help you with the present or places you have not been. Because it would be dangerous for your body to act out dreams while you are asleep a phenomenon known as sleep paralysis occurs which seperates all the activity in your brain from occuring in your body, thus when you are fighting a big fat elephant in your dreams your not beating your fists bloody on your bedroom wall. What sucks is when you wake up during sleep paralysis and you can see and you know you are awake but you can't move any part of your body.

The same thing essentially happens in sensory deprivation tanks or devices.

Dreams... they serve several important purposes in our lives.
The main function of dreams is a place where our subconscious rules. The conscious mind is asleep, it's endless babbling is put to rest for a while. It is also a time for the physical body to relax completely, and regenerate itself.
The subconscious mind can do several things during dreamtime.
1. The subconscious replays the days events, and evaluates them according to how they were expected to go.
2. The subconscious looks into the future, and prepares itself for certain situations which it expects to arise in the near future. It looks at different angles of situations and prepares itself to react to them.

Dreams are much more than how the days events went. Dreams are also a place where the spirit can roam about, and have some fun. Many people do not realize that a lot of their dreams were actually an out-of-body experience.

Dreams can take on all sorts of shapes and sizes. Sometimes, dreaming is a time for creative thought other times it is a time for assessing and cognition.

Many people learn through dreams. What I mean by this is that the subconscious can pick up information from an outside source whereby the person involved could witness...whereas if the person awake had gotten the same information, they wouldnt realize the subconscious had picked up this information. When you dream you ARE your subconscious...the conscious mind does not exist. When you remember a dream you are taking the subconscious memory into your conscious.
Many people are contacted by higher evolved life forms through dreams. It is not uncommon for someone to learn how to practice using telepathy, telekenesis, clairvoyance etc through dreams.
In Australia...the aboriginal people consider dreamtime just as important as waking life.

In short dreams are a time for the physical body to rest, and a time for the mind to relax, and learn without the mindless babbling of the conscious.

well, quite often, I have been having dreams in which i control what happens. It's not easy, it takes alot of concentrating on not concentrating... i cant explain it, but it seems to take alot of energy to make things exactly like i want them to. Most recently, i had a dream of the place where i grew up, and after a while i was able to recognize it as a dream and could control it. strange thing is, normally when i know i'm dreaming i wake up right away, but i kept it going for a long time. Since i could control it... i changed the scenario to one of my favorite types of dreams, ones in which i was having sex (hell, its almost as good, sometimes better then the real thing, and theres not a chance of anything bad happening!). i got the picture down... but i couldnt produce the physical stimuli you would feel while fucking. it was really interesting, i've had maybe 7 dreams in which i could in some way control the dream, like flying away or beating up stuff that scares me, but twice i was actually able to control almost everything that happened. I don't have any input on why it happens, just thought maybe you guys might find this interesting, heh.

>It's not easy, it takes alot of concentrating on not >concentrating... i cant explain it

Yet I know exactly what you mean. If you actually concentrate, like by using your concious mind to try and mould the dream, your concious mind will take over and force you awake. However, if you just let the dream flow through your subconcious, and merely KNOW what you want to happen, it can go on for what seems like a long time

I know exactly what your talking about but I have a problem with trying to think with my concious mind and waking up, this morning I woke myself up early, stayed up a short bit had a cup of tea then went back to bed, as I started to fall asleep I felt a floating sensation upward, well sort of floating its a odd sensation that I've had only a few times, then I felt mild vibrations in my back and then bam I felt a huge release of energy and then thought oh shit finally hear we go then bam awake, I was doing fine when I was just aware but then I noticed and actually had a concious thought I awoke. Does anyone know any thing that can help me over come this? or am I real close? or am I crazy and this is nothing like what happens you people?

Re: Dreams [Re: dragoon]

sounds like you were close to oobe. if you want lucid dreams first keep a dream log. every morning when you get up write all the dreams you had in it. you have about 4-6 dreams a night. this will help your mind remember what it is like to be in a dreaming state. have it clost enough to you bed that you can just reack and grab it. once you are up and about then you are well on your way to forgetting your dream. i find that the more i use a dream log the more dreams i remember. then set your alarm for 3:30-4:00 in the morning . when you get up in the wee hours of the morning meditate (any kind) for 20-30 minutes. Do this in a place where you WILL NOT fall back asleep. i personally like to go outside on my fromt lawn. I'm not trying to force my ideas apon anyone but it would be good if everyone practiced some form of meditation. I find it benefits you a lot. Then just go back to sleep and dream away. It should be easy to lucid dream.

It was sort of a coincidence that you got up to have tea in the morning. maybe i will have a cup when i get up too. well anyways it sounds like you were very, very, veeeerrrryyyy close to an oobe. good luck in the future.

Ted: "Hey kids, who does your mom look like in the morning?"
Kids... in unison: "James Brown!"
Darlene, "All right, thats enough... It's poison spaghetti for dinner tonight."

huh... sounds like a lot of work to do just to get a lucid dream. How do you find the energy to do it? I HATE screwing with my sleep in any way, and even if its only 4 hours or so, if its uninterrupted I'm happy. Lucid dreams just come to me, after the first one they come much more often. I don't know really how to explain it... I'm in the dream and then all the sudden I realize "damn, this is only a dream isn't it? this shit could never happen..." and either i wake up a few minutes later or manage to keep the dream going, but I'm in control. They are usually the most fun dreams I have, cause I pretty much do whatever the hell I want.

Thanks for the insight, I work nights though and don't get to sleep untill 230 300 how long should I wait? 3.5 hours would be half way through my normal sleeping patern. I do meditate usually shortly after I get up in the morning but this sounds like an idea worth trying, I find I can dream harder if that makes sense when I wake up and go back to sleep.

Note that Out of body experiences are more likely to occur when you are well rested. Meaning after you wake up from a full night's sleep, then take a quick nap.

Also one way of turning a regular dream into a lucid dream is by trying to control the dream...it doesn't take much. Do something you wouldn't do in real life. Ask yourself...am I dreaming?
Try to jump over a 300 foot wall.
See what happens.
Experiment.
