1st time Birthing. Questions w/pics
    #4014355 - 04/04/05 10:15 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Here's my setup:

I birthed 2 cakes 5 days ago. Both cakes were 5 days into 100% colinization. The cake on the left was dunked 8 hours and rolled. The cake on the right was dunked 8 hours only, not rolled, but a layer of verm was placed on top. Both cakes were misted to saturate the verm before entering terrium.

I'm wondering if I'm doing this right. I havn't seen any pins yet. The cake on the left has started growing myc again, but it's very fuzzy. I've read this means the humidity is too high? So I've stopped misting and just letting the perlite do the humidification. The top verm layers on the cakes are drying out though, so I'm not sure if I'm making a mistake? What I did today was not mist, but just use an eyedropper to wet the top verm layers. Not sure if I should do this to the verm on the side of the left cake or not though.

My chamber has been a steady 98%-99% on the humidity. Temps are ranging from 57 at night to 80 during the day. I keep an LED lamp in there on during the day (about 12 hours) and turn it off at night. I'm paranoid that I'm doing something wrong. I know it takes aprox 2 weeks to see pins usually, but I just wanted to check here as this is my first attempt at this and I don't want to mess it up. Advise please?

the humidity isn't your problem. the myc. is still growing b/c your temp is way too high for fruiting and it still in the incubating stage. drop the temp to a STEADY 70F or so. I would suggest getting a flourescent light also because it produces less heat keeping your moisture from evaporating too fast.

You should be fine. Cakes are pretty flexible I woudnt worry about the condition so much.
Check out my first cake-

It was only rolled and temperatures change between 65-90 everyday. I fanned 2-3 times a day and misted the sides if they didn't show much condensation. You should of rolled the cake on the right but you should be fine. Just dont expect as much yields against the one on the left. You should start seeing pinning in a couple days(Took me 8 days) I dont think the fluffyness is a problem. It could just be knots forming which means many shrooms! Good luck

I was thinking of bringing them indoors (they're in my garage right now) because the temp doesn't fluctuate as much, but it still gets into 80 degrees during the day.

Nice, I hope mine fruit ok.  This whole thing has really tested my patience!  But as you suggested, along with the fluffy stuff, it does look like the surface is starting to knot up a little!

Pins! Wohoo, I think? [Re: kratomboy]
    #4023682 - 04/06/05 11:35 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I've got a few pins now on the rolled cake! A few clumped together, and a few others popping up in random places. I'm stoked!

Now a new question.

These showed up yesterday but havn't grown much in the last 24 hours. They're heads are still a kind of light brown, but I thought they would grow a little faster than this one they pinned. I know if they abhort the heads will turn black, and to pick them, yada.... but Should I lower my humidity now that one of the cakes has pinned? Would this help them grow better, assuming they're not going to abhort?

Pins start slow then as time goes by they grow faster and faster. I would just keep your humidity as it is and see what happens
