The americans are the ones that got caught.

The only reason this was the first pope to preach unity and all that is because it was politically critical for him to do so. He really didn't have much choice.

thats nice, all you're doing is making an ass of yourself. I know nothing I say will change your mind, but hopefully you won't influence anyone else beyond yourself.

1. ROFL, who the fuck are you to say that? "Cmon! It's the 20th/21st century!!!" is the stupidest thing I've heard. This century may well benefit from the past, unless you think nothing is important other than the present and present concerns. If you include the future as an importance, you MUST include the past- they are ultimately one and the same.

2. This is debatable. It has its own view and you have your own.

3. Actually, no. They lead meager lives - the thrones and etc were commissioned a long time ago. The Vatican has its own businesses and its money is made justly. People give money of their own will- it's up to them, unless they are so weakminded as to fall to a greedy member in the hierarchy asking them for too much money. You don't have to give to the church at all, you are just encouraged to express its value and support the church monetarily. Besides which, they spend tons all the time helping the poor UNCONDITIONALLY. Yes, they give their opinion on matters, like "dont use condoms" or some such- but thats their own damn opinion. They have a right to one just as you do.

the catholic church isn't really one entity. You suffered I'm sure, but don't blame something which was local on something which is a global force. Americans fuck catholicism and make it shitty. The pope has 0 to do with that.

We're all big kids here, and we all have a good head on our shoulders.  I assure you, he's not swaying my opinion of the corruptness of the church.  They hide their money, in real estate and other sorts of assets.  What we have here is a good old difference of opinion, which is fine.  no sense in arguing over it :shrug:

We've been talking about taking a trip to Canoodia for some time now.  I'd love to chill with you, Trendal, Bom and Gillette (although I don't know her yet, I'm sure I'd like her)  We should try to figure something out :laugh:

Catholicism is obsolete, religion is a silly old thing people used to explain stuff before thinking was invented.

If his views on sexuality are debatable, could you explain why they would make any sense? The idea behind contraception being wrong is that Onanism is wasting the "seed". Since we now know that unused sperms just die off any get reabsorbed by the body, this assertion doesn't seem to make any logical sense at all.

Montreal is a cool city too, and I haven't been there in a few years.

That'd be a cool place to meet up, I think it's a little easier to get to from your area as well. You know, getting a hotel room and partying there sometime this summer might not be a bad idea...

You overlook a lot of things with this pope - he was the first non-Italian pope in like 500 years. He became a symbol for freedom through his own sacrifices and fights. You may not agree with what he did, but he is a very solid man who has stuck with his own views and fought for what he believed. How many people here cry about injustice but actually DO something about it? Like it or not, john paul 2 was tough as nails; he helped everyone while he could was basically flawless in terms of his actions. It has astounded me how devoted he can be to his position and his views, even as he has been dying painfully over the past years he has stretched the human limits of survival to keep going; he refuses to step down, which is just another testament of strength.

Politically critical? Bullshit! You apparently have no clue about how popes are chosen. Either that or you think he HAD to do something- why did the pope before him do very little compared to him? The pope could have just as well tried convincing everyone that catholicism was the way to go and that it would have prevented all attrocities. What pope in all of history has admitted that other religions have validity? Pah! politically critical? You make up critical points in an imaginary juncture to denounce a man of free will, personal wisdom and strength.

I wouldn't say it's obsolete. If you believe in God/Jesus, the laws that they preached 2000 years ago should still apply today. People change, but morals shouldn't.

It just WHAT the catholics stand for that I'm against.

i see no one has so much as blinked in face of their judgement. I promise I'm not blind to the evils of the Catholic church, but the strengths far far outweight the evils. Fuck, art wouldnt even be important at all without the Catholic church- science wouldn't exist, NOTHING modern would have existed to any degree as it does now. Yes I just put forth a general claim and defending it is slightly trick in a few specific cases, but I don't have enough energy for heated debate on something which people are already set-in-stone about anyway

See, it was the time. If the pope hadn't chosen to become a bunch more liberal the catholic church would have been an even more irrelevant dinosaur than it is today. He just twisted the church so that it was relevant to modern society and able to live on. Like the Buddy Christ.
