-Poisonous-
Widely distributed in North America.
-Reported to have caused deaths in Europe.
In North America some people have gotten sick from eating them, but nothing more severe.

I found these about a week ago along a mulched trail.
Tropical Storm Gabrielle put this trail six feet under, from flooding.

THATS hyphaloma fasiculare? i was inder the impression that this speceis had silvery-grey gills and smooth (not scaly) cap, purple-brown sporeprint, the only Toxic (othere than psychoactive) of the order stophariacae.

what you have looks more like something from the cortinariacae side of the spectrum. like a courinarius, gymnopilus, or galerena


ive got a few pics of H. Faliculare but they are on a zip drive and its currently on another comp. but theres quite a difference.
there are some similarities too.

The first picture sorta shows the purple-brown tinted gills
..i did not not take a spore print of these, but, i took a picture of them because the muhrooms were more rubust than the ones i normally find.

i think they are sulfur tufts

i found gymnopilus spectabilis two days in a row here in sunshine state.

I don't think those are N. facsiculare. They look like some species of Agrocybe.

N. facsiculare are yellower than that, have a different shape (more like a Psilocybe), and a dull greenish tinge to the gills caused by the yellow flesh showing thru the purplish spores. They grow in clusters of up to several hundred specimens, sometimes in chips but usually on logs or stumps.

I'll try to send some photos this fall, after the rain gets going--they're extremely common around here.

of course spore prints are always helpful :)

so is woodsman but then what species are they??

theyre certainly not uncommon here.
down here, deep south,
we have a great variety of questionable..subspecies
who knows

just today i had camera and hand and
found a group of what i believe is Gymnopilus spectabilis.
I didnt take a picture of it for some reason..

I'll post some more strange yellow mushpics soon..

Most of the sulphur tufts I've found have the greenish looking gills Woodsman mentioned.And lots of times you'll see the spore deposit on the caps of other mushrooms in the bunch.The first time I found some and saw the purple-brown spore deposit I thought I'd found something magic.I'm glad I did more research on'em to find out what they were.I understand the sulphur tufts can really make you really feel like shit.
I'm sure you have sulphur tufts in your area.They are common in the central N.C. area,and they seem to have a very long season, growing nearly year round.
Of course there's always the chance of it being a subspecies as you mentioned.
The mushroom in your photo does look awfully familiar though,seems I've run across it while tromping through the woods.
I'm fairly sure I may be able to find some S. T.'s around soon,and if so I'll try to take a photo also.

I want to know how you and L K take such awesome damn pictures! They're always clear as a bell : )

These could possibly be Tricholomopsis decora
"Decorated Mop".. or possibly even its look alike T. sulfureoides..
