Bricktop or Sulfur Tuft?
    #13345712 - 10/16/10 07:54 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Oldmanofthewoods and I found these at my parents house today along with about 50 puffballs and two pounds of oysters. I am interested in trying these because I am pretty sure they are bricktops, but there is a chance that they are sulfur tufts. I would rather not spend the next 3 days shitting my brains out. Based off of these pictures, can anybody verify that I have bricktops? We have about half a pound to a pound of these here. The last week has been our most fruitful foraging of the year.

Thanks guys, and hello again.

Doesn't look close at all to sulfur tuft. The color on sulfur tuft is really distinct yellowish. Here's an example in a pic i took:

They definitely look like Hypholomas. There are other species in the genus too that can look similar. The color on my monitor isn't accurate, so I can't be sure there.. but the way they look is close to the ones I found. Is the cap color on any of the young ones you found before they age/dry out red (brick red)? I can't find my brick tops in my gallery.. too many pics.

I think neither.  Hypholoma capnoides looks a good bet.  Were they growing on a conifer?

It wasn't growing on a conifer. They were growing on a stump that was also covered in moss. Pretty sure it wasn't a conifer stump, based off of what else was around.

As far as I know, the red Hypholomas are edible. Only thing to really be concerned about is Sulfur tuft in Hypholoma.
