Question about sporeprints
    #496443 - 12/19/01 09:52 PM (23 years, 6 months ago)

I have seen in numerous places that most active species will produce a purple to purple-brown sporeprint.

Are there any toxic or poisonous species that will produce a similar print?

Yes. Most mushrooms in the family Stropharicae (of which the genus Psilocybe is part) produce such a print. Poisonous species occur in the genera Hypholoma (AKA Naematoloma), Pholiota, and possibly Stropharia. Most of these are mildly toxic, causing stomach upset and a few hours of misery, but Hypholoma facsiculare (Sulfur Tuft or Green Gilled Woodlover) has reportedly caused fatalities.

Hi woodsman, do not fortget that there are now also six psilocybian species of Hypholoma which Guzman is currently writing the papers on their taxonomy for publication.

The species are included in my list at my web-site at Http://mjshroomer.yage.net

They are listed in the index page of the web-site and at the Shroomery
