New Testament Final Paper
    #398161 - 09/19/01 11:19 AM (23 years, 2 days ago)

.... so i'd like to see Ram Dass in Miami in early Nov., but it turns out my classes are running until mid Nov. however, as always i believe if there's a will there's a way. it seems somewhat unlikely, but why not try? i'd have to write a 5 page paper on the new testament, a 20 page paper on the crazy shit going down in south east Asia, and another 5 page poetry paper by the end of october - i'm going to try to write my new testament paper in the next week and hopefully be done with that class in mid Oct.
any good ideas on what to write about - markos, gnrm23? something that will interest me yet not be an overwhelming project (which is what i normally wind up getting myself into).
i've been thinking about examining influences of Greco-Roman paganism like Dionysus on the New Testament or maybe certain mircale-workers Sons of God like Apollonius of Tyana and explain traditions told about Jesus in conext of Greco-Roman world, or maybe a paper on Gnostics and Jewish Scripture somehow tied in with the NT (you'd gotta have sumpin' to say about that MtG, eh?)

to MtG: if it doesn't work out, i'll be adrift the florida area for 6 weeks of winter - Rainbow kids know the wisdom of the birds - migrate down south. if you find the time and desire you could make the Rainbow gathering for awhile (like a weekend - take it into consideration, met some truly righteous folks there) - if not, i'll certainly have the time to soar your way for a bit.

peace ya all/cj

such mystery cults and simon magus and other gnostics are all of interest to me

In five pages, you could briefly summarize the contemplative practices of the Greek Orthodox on Mt. Athos, which is very yoga-like: following the breath from the head to the heart and repeating the Prayer of the Heart, synchronizing the breath, heartbeat and prayer so that eventually each breath and heartbeat becomes the prayer. "The Way of a Pilgrim' and "A Pilgrim Continues His Way' by the anonymous 19th century Russian (edited by R.M. French) . " Writings From the Philokalia on Prayer of the Heart" and "The Art of Prayer" both by Kadloubovsky and Palmer. Write the paper out of theses at Borders or Barnes and Noble. Start with Nicephorus the Solitary. Just a thought.

MtG: I'm game if I can demonstrate a strong, interesting connection between the New Testament and their practices. While this sounds very interesting to me, I'm doubtful that my professor will take interest if their Prayer practice could be adapted to any religion and is not intimately connected/mandated by the New Testament. Basically, the question at hand is: will I have plenty to babble about concerning the New Testament with this topic?
Thanks much.

The Greek Orthodox ground their practices thoroughly in the Bible. The statement to "Pray without ceasing," from Thessalonians is the basis for the anonymous pilgrim's quest to understand what that means. The Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have Mercy on me [a sinner]," is also derivative of the New Testament. The repetition 'on the lips,' then 'in the mind,' and finally, [it descends] to the heart. There, th Logos in spoken form becomes transformed into a spiritual essence (air/spirit=pneuma) in which one's very breath and heartbeat become the prayer. There are enough Biblical references with breath and heart and spirit to support the practice, although it is admitted that the psychospiritual
practices are only supportive of the human pole of the divine-human dialogue which is prayer. Mt. Athos Greece, a place where no female has stepped in 2000 years; a land of caves high on cliffs, and monasteries; a place with a flag and status separate from Greece due to its spiritual pre-eminence - is completely devoted to Hesychasm - tranquility. It is Eastern Christianity at it most profound. Unless professor knows nothing about Eastern Christianity, or Hesychasm in particular, he cannot doubt the thoroughly Christian nature of its practices. And yes you'll have plenty to babble about. I wrote a 20 page+ paper on it.
