Casing: 2nd flush

Hi. . . my friend, who's doing all this stuff I would never dream of doing, sent me some pics of his first flush. These are PF strain, PF tek cakes broken into 2 cases:
Nice, huh? Anyway, some of the PF cakes went into cases, the others stayed as cakes and flushed only one time. He's concerned that this casing (which is just verm (hongus tek)) will flush only one time as well. This would be a shame, b/c the yield is good and he'd like to get another 2 good flushes after this one. Any suggestions on how to ensure at least one more good flush? Thank you. As always, all suggestions will be tried in the order received.

Recase them - as in add another smaller casing layer, and then give them a good water - not too much though, all you'll get more of those juicy fatarses!!

I read about a rehydrating tek somewhere once. (I believe I did).. Someone said that you could Break the cake up into lines straight up and down and stuff the open areas with vermiculite with water in it. (Damp or slightly wet, I forget.) You could try that, right? With your casing, you might just slice it in half or in three lengthwise lines and stuff it with damp vermiculite and then case it again. I am not sure about this, but maybe you can get some opinions on this from the more experienced growers.

Simply recasing it works.I've never recased myself, but there are plenty of post proving that it works.Personally, I just give the casing a good watering after the harvest is picked and leave the casing intact. It works for me. I wouldn't cut the casing up.I'm sure this can be done with sucess, but if the casing is healthy is best to leave it alone. Every extra invasion,if you will, can introduce contaminants. Not only that, but the more you mess with the actual mycelial network, the more energy that it has to use to rebuild itself. That leaves less energy for fruiting. If you have extra casings and want to experiment, then cutting one up to see how it goes wouldn't be a big deal. If you have a limited number of casings, I would go with a proven method.

I guess I'm confused . . . does recasing mean that more verm is put ontop of the setup as above (minus shrooms of course) and misted? Or does recasing mean that everything above is transferred to another container?

Recasing is removing the entire casing layer, and well, recasing. You don't need to do that. Here's what I do between flushes. Drag a knife thru the casing layer, you can make XXX patterns, give the casing a good misting, then just sit back and wait.

Thank you one and all. My friend will probably put moistened verm on one case and, on the other, follow mew's suggestion and cut off the top layer and repack w/ fresh verm. They're practically the same, so maybe we can see which method works better. Peace
