PLEASE HELP! does contamination go away?
    #396559 - 09/17/01 08:41 AM (22 years, 6 months ago)

this is my first attempt and i have 10 jars that are between 50% and 90% colonized. on friday i noticed two of my jars had a black/green tint to some of the white part. i took them out of the kerr box with the other jars (i been using this box as a colonizing location) and put them in my dresser. well yesterday (sunday) i checked on them out of curiousity to see if the contam had gotten much worse and didn't notice the same black/green stuff at all but the jars had jumped from being about 40% colonized when i took the out of the box to about 90% colonized now. what happened? i'm am positive about what i saw on friday which prompted me to seperate the jars but can contamination just go away? should i be safe and chunk these jars? or go ahead and fruit them?
please help!!!

I am fairly new, but the black stuff could be bruising, especially if it wasn't growing and went away. I don't know about the green except to say that I lost my jars to a yellowish green tint in the uncolonized substrate around the outer edges of the mycellium. What do the jars smell like?

Subsequent to the short period after innoculation, when you're supposed to keep them dark, those jars aren't supposed to be on tight. You're supposed to have them as loose as possible and be misting them and stuff. That may be the reason for the rot.

cheers,

huh..
I never heard of misting jars?!
loosen the lid, and mist the jars will CAUSE "rot" not prevent it

I assumed he was using the PF method. Sorry I didn't ask.

here's the link if you'd like to check it out:

http://www.shroomery.com/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=17

Look at step 5 and notice where it says: "Once fruiting has begun, I would lightly spray tops of jars (lids on, but loose, of course) twice a day. The moisture will make it inside the jars, and work great."

Not everyone uses the same method. Maybe it's just different from yours.

Sometime you can mist the jars...or the terr. that their in. It helps with humidity. You can and should loosen the lids once the mycl. have really taken hold. This allows for gas exchange. Thats why some people like to use fiter disks. They won't have to worry about loosening their jar lids.Cont. does not go away! Maybe you saw some bruising going on...are you sure it was black and green? If so...throw'em in your yard.

step 5 refers to after fruiting has begun.. IE, the jar is 100% colonized, and then some.
so it would not contam..
unlike the guy who first posted this message who's jars are only 90% done..

but still, i dont think his problem is a lack of moisture

The mycelium can bruise dark enough blue to make it look as if it were black.  It can be vfery very hard to tell unless it is held up to a bright light.  This happened to me when my cakes shrank and started wiggling around in their jars.  If it went away then it is not a contam and you do not need to worry about it.

A trick to taking lids off very tightly sealed jars is to get a butter knife and take the handle of it (holding the blade) and tap it along the edge of the lid all the way around.  Tap on the corner and the top for a little bit, and then try to open it.  his method of opening tight jars has never let me down yet.  If it is rusted shut, it may not work, but it is unlikely that it is rusted shut.

I admit it, Im a fungal-feliac
