contamination!?!
    #339276 - 06/12/01 05:28 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

AFOAF birthed 12 pf cakes into a perlite terrarium a week ago(2 inches of perlite and 1 of water). the cakes were given light when the terrarium was opened to fan, about 3 times a day. just yesterday he noticed small amounts of a greenish blue substance on all of the cakes. when the cakes were broken apart, no green blue stuff was seen inside, and the mycelium network was well established. he wants to know what he can do to get rid of the possible contamination. would the mycelium eventually take over the green blue stuff, or does the cake have to be cased or treated with h202? no pins were seen up to this point, and the cakes were sitting directly on the perlite all the time they were in the terrarium.

This does not sound like contamination, sounds like bruising from handling or misting. If there is no smell and no green growth raising up from the cake you may be ok. Bruising will not be growth but color. Green mold, usually trichodermis<-(spelling may be off) caused by human skin spores, will spead unlike bruising and is not deadly to humans, but a mushroom killer. If the green is "LIME" green you have a form of penicillan and I would not eat the fruits from that.
Here is a tip, green mold can not live outside in the fresh air very well, if you can place then in indirect weather keeping humidity up and the mold, if there is contams will die off...Good luck..........

Sounds like bruising. But if your worried just give a liberal spraying of h2o2, the cakes will recover.

Maybe the 'rooms would benifit from more light, it sounds like your box is opaque; maybe if you cover it with a layer or 2 of saran wrap (instead of the opaque lid) you would'nt be tempting molds and whatnot by leaving the tank open?

ok thanks all. as the blue greenness has not spread, i now realize its probably just bruising. also, the cakes have started to pin, and i read somewhere that contaminated cakes will not pin, so i think im ok.

if it is contams- couple thoughts

-too much h20 in perlite-wet not have visible water
-cakes directly on perlite, while good to rehydrate,it is asking for it
-fanning?

no- that is not at all true...

only in extreme cases, certain types, and it usually just diminished,or aborts
definately not a way to rule out contams...
