Don't kill yourself for ignorance!

Double post of Jaybin's Emergency Room experience. At the risk of sounding like everyone's father: When we sterilize substrate and make conditions perfect for the proliferation of mycelium, it's also perfect for concentrated growth of any other opportunistic organism--like unwanted bacteria, mold and fungus. You're not dealing with a singular pathogenic spore or cell. You are dealing with a STOCKPILE!! You have mass produced the shit. IT CAN KILL YOU EASILY! The shit that makes us sick exists in nature in parts per million. This is a scant amount. And as a result, we don't get sick too often. Our sterilized jars of substrate, if innoculated with the WRONG organism becomes a lethal dose. This isn't a stray spore entering our lungs. THIS IS A HIT OF CONCENTRATED POISON! We unwittingly create a potent biological time bomb. The amount of bacteria that we can grow in a jar is present in numbers higher than the population of people on this planet. An analogy for those unconvinced, breathing off the top of a contaminated jar is about as intelligent as licking a petri-culture of HIV virus. Read the teks and use common sense!! If a jar becomes contaminated DON'T open it up. PRESSURE COOK IT, and dispose of the contents while it's still hot. Use a pot holder. Either down your in sinkerator, or outside to the dumpster. If you even THINK a jar MIGHT be contaminated, don't gamble with your life. You should almost be able to smell it through the metal lid. And DEFINITELY through the innoculation holes if the tape is removed. IF YOU'RE GONNA SMELL IT, HOLD THE JAR A FOOT FROM YOUR FACE AND G E N T L Y WAFT A WHIFF TOWARDS YOUR NOSE. A contaminated jar is a super concentrated source of deadly microbes. . Jaybin, is fuckin' lucky to be alive. If you suspect contams, ditch it. I'm amazed by how some people ask if a known contaminated mushroom MIGHT be safe to consume. And they're encouraged by responses of those who say, "Yeah man, try it!! What's the worst that can happen?" If you're so desperate for a buzz, you shouldn't be dealing with mushrooms in the first place. WHY BE STUPID AND RISK IT? Ditch it. That way you'll be alive. Sorry for the sermon, but this place shouldn't be a source for danger; but rather, pleasure.

well said, I think that's some incredibly useful information you should try and see if you can document a precaution with the shroomery's mushroom cultivation info and teks

good point, I raise my hand and plead guilty to the above, often used smell as indiator of contam, also when i know one is contamed, have taken the lid off the jar, and allow a sort of smoke like substance out of the jhar. Excuse, never thought, won't be doing it again tho.

The intention of the post was not to call you stupid. Ignorance is not stupidity. You just didn't know. I'm sorry you're sick, and should have expressed that in my post. The post was created for everyone who is unaware that you don't sniff a contaminated jar. I think you took the title of my post personally. It wasn't directed towards you. This place is all about education, man. Hope you get better soon.

Yeah, It could have been anyone who got sick. To tell you the truth, I had no idea just by SMELLING the jars, that you could get sick. Jaybin's experience really opened my eyes a little bit. I always knew not to eat a mushroom which had been exposed to contamination, however just by the act of smelling to make sure it was contamination, could be life threatening. I think there should be a clear point on this subject in the PF Tek and MMGG Tek. I mean I dont even think they even mentioned anything about the risks of smelling jars for contamination! Thanks for the post ChangLee... I'll remember just to eat the contamination rather than just smell it. err, wait. What did you say?

Very true...when dealing with potential biohazards, extreme care should be taken...and I am sure we have all done stupid things when it comes to this....If you want to smell it waft it from a foot away...and when something is contamed...it aint too difficult to tell...real words to the wise. Cheers

Thanks for the heads up, I'm new to this, and I am sure I would have smelt it if I saw contamination since no one has ever said otherwise! You may have saved my life, yea never know. Somone should make a "Shroom Growers Dangers FAQ" or something like that.

No put down, everybody makes mistakes. Everybody learns. A good "rule of thumb" is: IF it looks nasty or bad, it is. Slime, green mold, black spots, weird colors in the jar or cobweb running rampant out of substrate are telling you it's bad. When looking, one need not smell fecal matter to recognize it as such. Looking is how you learn. Look @ all the contam pic's at the various sites. Then compare those with any funny stuff you might have going on. If it's bad looking, take as many precautions as you would if it were infected with anthrax. Forgot to add, some years ago, a guy I talked to was doing his thing in a midwest barn had some comtams in a few jars. He sat them aside on a shelf, to clean out later. Forgot about them for a week or more. Then took them out back, emptied them on a compost pile. His dog grabbed one & ran off. Thinking it was something to play with. That dog was dead in less than a week. Healthy barn yard dogs have a strong immune systen. Vet said he never saw anything like it. Hard lesson to learn for that dude. He loved that dog. so did this whole experience make you not want to continue with experimenting with the fungus? like i posted in the other post, im even afraid to touch anything contaiminated. ready to call in a biohazard team to remove that thing. and if you do notice some nasty green stuff, why would you even want to stick your nose in it? it looks so nasty, from the jar it looks like it would smell terrible. everyone has seen mold grow on some forgotten dish, or the forgetten container in the fridge, has anyone stuck there nose in that? i dont think so. and i am respecting the fact you didnt know, so im not busting your balls. peace
