SLOW COLONIZATION
    #397520 - 09/18/01 12:54 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

I GOT ABOUT 8 GOOD JARS THAT WERE INNOCULATED WITH PF CLASSIC SPORES USING PF TEK ON SEPT. 1 (18 DAYS AGO). BUT I DIDN'T USE 1/2 PINT JARS I USED 1/4 INT JARS ( HALF THE SIZE OF 1/2 PINT..DUH) SO ANYWAY SOME OF THE JARS ARE STILL ONLY ABOUT 50% COLONIZED BUT IT VARIES UP TO ABOUT 80%. BUT I'VE HEARD THAT COLONIZATION SLOWS DOWN AS THE MYCELIUM FILLS THE JAR. I HEARD OF PF 1/2 PINT JARS COLONIZING IN 10 DAYS SO I THOUGHT A JARHALF THE SIZE WOULD TAKE HALF THE TIME. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG AND HOW CAN I SPEED UP THE PROCESS??

THANX IN ADVANCE

OOPS! FORGOT TO GIVE YOU GUYS A LITTLE INFO...I HAVE REMOVED THE FOIL FROM THE LIDS ALREADY (ABOUT 4 DAYS AGO) THEY ARE BEING KEPT IN THE BOX THAT THE JARS COME IN IN TOTAL DARKNESS EXCEPT WHEN I CHECK ON THEM AND I HAVE A THERMOMETER IN THE BOX WITH THEM THAT READS ABOUT 80 DEG. I HAD THEM IN A CABINET IN THE VERY BEGINNING WHICH I FOUND OUT WAS TOO WARM FOR THEM BUT THEY HAVE BEEN IN 80 DEG. TEMP FOR ABOUT 9 DAYS NOW.

if your innoculation holes are covered with tape, this will slow things down dramatically - and often actually stall the jars. To let them breath, cover the holes with an alcohol swab which will act as a filter...

classic Pf tek uses half pint jars, and in some cases takes two weeks, especially if spore solution was used spareingly.

if the top area of the jar is colonized, find a way to introduce air excahage, like use micropourous filters.
