Slow colonization
    #358131 - 07/21/01 01:37 AM (23 years, 4 months ago)

Ive inoculated my jars about 30 days ago. All the jars have shown signs of growth but i thought that they would have finished by now, i would say that the jars are roughky 10% complete. temp=80, size=1pint. Is there any way that i could speed up the process?

I find that talking - pleading with each jar works very well (providing the jars are in a good mood)... no seriously, can they breath (no tape over holes?)

I am about in the same boat- 20 days with barely noticeable colonization. I am using 1 pint jars with rye. They all show some white stuff, but not much.
They have been, generally, at 73-78 degrees. I am considering getting a heating system and keeping them at 85 degrees, but my jars aren't breathing at all. I heard this could cause problems, so I've kept them airtight (used a sporeprint).
So, I am also watching for answers to this dilemma from more experienced growers- to give them air or not to give them air? Will a higher temp make that big a difference?

Thirty days is a long time to be only 10% colonized. Perhaps you are packing your substrate to tightly. Substrate should only be gently packed, even loose. If you have a verm seal on top you can do without the tape on the holes. My friends usually take the tape off after 10 days or so. They usually get 100% colonization within 12-25 days depending on strain and substrate factors. If your substrate is packed very tight it can take considerably more time.

let the jars breathe, take tape off the holes, especially if using the ramsy verm. seal, its enuf to stop contams most of the time, anywho, let them breathe, im almost certain this is whats wrong.

Keep Trippin' and Blazin'
