Cleaning Eggshells

Just wanted to run through how to clean 'em, I finally found my own way that works so far, I haven't tested it out yet, but i'll do so just to ensure that my procedure works. I use my own eggshells, so I had to figure out a way to clean 'em. Maybe this'll help someone who can't get calcium carbonate...or someone who just wants to try 'em?...
1.Under running water(hot works best), rub the inside of the eggshell until it no longer feels slimy and gooey, i've noticed that some of the membrane comes off, but not all.Don't have to dry them, just makes sure that they're not filled with lots of water.
(2.)Some people boil first and then move to the next step, i've noticed that you get the same results w/o, and it's kind of a mess, so i skip it
2.I then put them in a bowl and crunch them up a bit.
3.Then I put them in something pc-able (has a triangle w/ a #5 inside) and I microwave for about 6 mintues, I do it one mintue at a time, mainly because i'm using a microwaveable measuring cup and it tends to get a bit hot quickly.
That's about it, some people like to dip them in alcohol first or during some point, but i'm pretty sure that the microwave bakes the Fuck out of everything, and since all the gooey stuff was removed, you don't have to worry about cooked egg.
So far it's worked great but i'll be putting it to the test when my h/poo/straw(o/i) casing is ready to be cased
Hope this helped someone somehow.

so washing them doesn't remove all of the membrane, but you haven't had any problem w/ contamination? have you ever used them in your casings before?
i got a couple hundred egg shells that i rinsed and sat in peroxide/h2o in the fridge. i wasn't sure how to clean them, but i wanted to mix them 75/25 w/ calcium carb. as a buffer.
let me know how it fairs for you

When i said "worked great", i was referring to other ways of cleaning that i've tried. So far this ones gets the membrane off and cleans them best. I used alcohol,Acetone(CH3)2CO, and i tried boiling..no of them gave results that i wanted...and then microwaving...and here is where i am now...
<>so washing them doesn't remove all of the membrane<> Sure doesnt, Look at it in good light, when you crack them open, you'll noticed that there's something thin holding the pieces together, you want that off, it'll rot, washing it doesn't remove all of it...
The microwave at high, for 6 minutes, is sure to kill all the shit inside the egg...Plus it gets them cracker dry, making it great to put them in a coffee grinder and get powdered calcium carbonate,
<>rinsed and sat in peroxide/h2o in the fridge<> H2o2 might get it all off, never thought of that, but i'm sure it doesn't take off all of the membrane, i might do that after i'm completely finished, then rinse w/ spring water...I'm rather meticulous, so i have to be sure that they're clean as can be...w/o over doing it of course

Egg washing tek:
Screw it just buy a bag of hydrated lime at True Value for $6, you only need like a teaspoon max per casing mix batch so 1 bag lasts virtually forever.

Yea... But some of us don't want to spend the money (lazy-poor fucks), and if you're just going to throw the shells away...then why not...

from a bird feeding perspective, (as some peeps i know have a aviary in their back yard). to make them safe for the birds they are tossed aside in a bucket then when enough have been collected and are dry, they are broken up and placed on a baking sheet and stuck in the oven. for about 30 min or so.
not sure on the temp, i just asked "why the heck are you cooking eggshells" and was told this kills any disease that might harm the birds. would think it might do the same for mush work.
just thought i might toss that out there.

Not a bad idea to be honest...
I baked some and it turned out the same I left them in there too long the 2nd time around and they burned lol.
I'd use the oven but i'm not big on waiting for it to heat up, i'm more of a let's--do-it-now-since-we-can-kinda-guy...

That's it, iwas confusing it with peptone at the moment and didn't want to post incorrectly. Wasn't quite sure about the chemical properties either. Thanks
