Cleaning eggshells

My family eats a lot of eggs, so i figured i'd put all the eggshells to use. Someone told me that you have to get the membrane off of the shell. I had to rinse it under water and rub it to get it to where it felt like there was nothing there, but it was still there, i ended up cracking the shell and peeling it off, piece by piece, i did about five eggs until my hands got pruny and i finally said Fuck it...I'm sure there's an easier way, can i use bleach to clean it, or alcohol? Something that involves less work than what i've previsouly been doing would be,...really great...thankx

Next time try to boil them first, it will come off a lot easier (membrane).

Perhaps some sort of solvent would get it off. Alcohol, ether, I would try something of that nature.

I was thinking about that but no one's really suggested it, so i figured that it'd chemicaly do something to the eggshells and i end up wasting my time. Cutting corners isn't fun when the result is But alcohol would evaporate...hmmm. Anyone else? tnks eris

The main ingredient in eggshells is calcium carbonate (e.g. chalk, limestone, sea shells, coral, and pearls). The solvents shouldn't do any damage, as long as they aren't acidic (acid neutralizes bases).

boiling is your best method, that or boiling the eggs and peeling them while they're hot.

Boil hell out of shells first, then nuke hell out of them - to dry them. That much heat, from two differing sources - will degrade membrain & kill - anything nasty. Worked for my foaf, before he found a cheap source & started using oyster shell flour.

It might work to boil the hell out of them and then see if drying them (very dry) will make the fleshy membrane shrink and hopefully all but remove it self in the process. Maybe even put a little table salt in it. I havent tryed this but the physics are there. If you try this let us know if it works.

Boiled in microwave for 6 mintues....Membrane bubbled up towards the bottom but it still didn't come off real well... Nuked it for 6 mintues in the microwave, i'm sure everythings done and dead...Membrane looks like it's not there but you can kind of see it. The shell just falls apart when you break it apart, it looks like it's really clean, next time i'll probably dip it in alcohol to remove the remaining liquid in the Egg...I noticed that some pooled in the lil oval part of the egg and was basically fried egg, don't want that in my powerized mix , alcohol would probably take care of that.
The one i soaked in alcohol (been about a mintue) - looks like the membrane just decided to leave the eggshell lol, looks like it melted off, i'll take it out and four mintues and see how it looks (5 total)...The membrane is still kind of on there, needs to be microwaved..
The one in nail polish remover...??...donno, will check in 5....but it smells like really, not good, like hardcore nail polish, probably won't ever use it ...Yea, it did about the alcohol but it smells terrible lol...

I read on a craft site that bleach was supposed to dissolve the membrane. When I tried it, the membrane only turned yellow. Made it easier to see, but sure didn't dissolve it.

I'm sure that it was completely dead though. Mine has done the same, Stained yellow...
If you nuke it in the microwave after - No probs.

Well, you grind them to powder first. Considering about a teaspoon-tablespoon's worth of eggshell per 5-10 cups of casing mixture, it takes a decent amount of eggs to get what you need. At least a dozen shells for one small casing mix.
