I have heard this sooo many times before............. and heres the scoop on 'mushroom compost'
'SPENT SUBSTRATE' mixed in with some other shit......... its nothing special...... it is the 'USED UP' soil that mushroom farms are donewith........ 'used up' means 'spent nutrients'.
puscle, get some 'worm casting' compost........... way way way way way better........ www.yelmworms.com

Not necessarily previously used. Most is, but my bud found some Mushroom Compost that had never been used- the kind that is supplied to mushroom growers. He says it seems to be GREAT!

Oh, BTW, he says he mixes it with about 1/3 worm castings and maybe 10% vermiculite.

Well, whatever is in it, Pavlov... It is doing better than anything else Ive used before. Much better than the 50/50 tek. I'll try to take some pics of these big ass fruits when they are done. Im sitting on Koh Samui right now. The largest is over 6 inches tall and the veil hasnt even began to break yet. Im sure that the eggshell is helping on that. This will be my fourth flush and it looks as though I will get much more than I did on my first. Oh, and i DID NOT sterilize the substrate. i quit doing that after a noticeable affect sterilizing had on my flushes. And I have yet to have contamination in any of the casings I have done.

It seems to me that he was speaking of adding eggshell to his classic 50/50 casing mix. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Okay... I'll set it straight. I used the "mushroom compost" from Kmart along Verm and eggshell on an old casing that I had. I laid 2 inches over the old casing layer. It colonized the new layer and is now fruiting. Im getting better results with the Compost and eggshell than Ive ever gotten with the plain 50/50 tek. The eggshell gives a wonderful base for the shroomies to grow on, and the compost is high in nitrates. :)The mycelium looks incredible. It's so rhizmorphic, it looks like hundreds of daggers coming from the soil. Oh, and Pavlov, it was spawned from verm,flour,finch seed, flax seed. Hawks recipe. And LearyFan, If you add a whole new casing layer after a couple of flushes, that will start it up again. As long as you have room to add to it, your flushes should not deplete. At least, until contams set in.... Oh, and leave your casing in the dark for about 3-4 days after you put a new layer on it. This will let the mycelium colonize the new layer. Then go back to normal lighting
