Lawmakers consider requiring "fire safe" cigarettes

SALEM, Ore. Tobacco companies are opposing a bill that would require all cigarettes sold in Oregon be "fire safe" _ or self-extinguishing if not being smoked _ to cut back on cigarette-caused fires.

Manufacturers argue that cigarette costs will increase and small cigarette companies will be forced out of business if they are subject to different state rules.

New York and Canada have similar laws and about 15 other states are considering it.

Opponents have also argued that states should wait until they know whether New York's law has any effect.

The measure's supporters say the state can't wait to prevent the deaths and damage that results from cigarette-caused fires.

Bill Lafferty of the Oregon Department of Forestry said the bill could even help with this summer's fire season, which is expected to be dangerous.

ha! yeah right.. that would require them taking out all the chemicals they ADD to make them burn faster and more evenly.. like ammonia. Then where would they be?

Actually, my understanding is that they add even MORE chemicals to ensure that it does not burn to the end...

No they dont add chemicals they have a special paper that has "bands" that run around hte cigarrete that are thicker than the usual cig paper. The cig itself will go out after a few minutes but when you pull on it the little bands burn easily. Its pretty simple really I sort of think all cigs should be like that. Peace

It's not a few minutes. Without actually testing right now it seems that if I don't pull on it within 30 seconds it goes out. Kind of a nuisance actually.

Well this will take all the danger (read: 'excitement') out of smoking after sex. If I wasn't addicted I might consider giving it up...

Smoking paper isn't good for you either. Have you looked into whether or not they would apply chemicals to the paper?

no its not chemicaly treated it works just like a cigar does. If you dont pull on a cigar its thicker wrapping doesnt burn and the cigar goes out. Same idea here. Sucks that its 30 seconds tho. We dont have them in Texas yet. Maybe it needs some work but really whats wrong with preventing fires? and it WOULD prevent fires. Oh yea and im not really worried about smoking a little more paper man it cant be any worse for me than the tobacco. Peace

Lol, yeah man...worrying about a few extra mgs of paper in your cancer stick is kind of silly :smirk:

If all they have to do is add some thicker bands around the smoke...I don't see why this is a bad idea at all!

Except for adding to the "too stupid to think for ourselves" laws...

Damn now our cigarettes are gonna taste like ass when they go out in mid-smoking of them. Im pretty sure any american citizen has the knowledge that cigarette ash will burn. Ive found it out to much myself in the car, But it really takes alot to start a fire. Ive dropped cigarettes on the carpet everywhere accidentaly and always have time to catch it.

but i mean come on. How bout making more flame retardant fabrics than cigarettes.

How about just pulling people out of their cars and kicking them repeatedly in the head when they throw out lit cigarettes.


I say this as an ex-smoker who blackened a sizeable portion of someone's yard by throwing out a lit cigarette in high winds during the middle of a dry season.

I saw it the next day as I was heading back home. The fire has almost made it to the edge of a large wooded area. It was one of the things that inspired me to quit smoking (again).
