Growing Substrate
    #393855 - 09/13/01 10:20 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

To at least ease question in my mind... I'd like to ask a seemingly simple question. What substrate is the best for a quick and easy colonization using the quart-jar method? I have been using brown rice, and it has been doing well, but I am looking to try to improve upon my past methods.

I have looked in countless documents about the subject, there are many. Some talking about rice, vermiculite, rye, finchseed, seed meal, or combinations as in Ryche Hawk's method on this webpage:

http://www.shroomery.com/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=33

Which one would be optimal? I'm planning on innoculating a total of 12 jars sunday mid-day (due to only having one syringe left), so I would like some input on the situation.

As of right now, I am planning on preparing 6 jars in the old (rice) method and 6 jars prepared as Ryche outlines in that weppage. (Ryche if you happen to read this please give your own thoughts as well)

Please help me out, as I have no idea what to use right now. There are SO many choices!

Thank you in advance,
abudiwa

P.S. In my incubating chamber... Is there a reason for the hole cut out of the lid and clear plastic put on it? What if I just cut a little hole big enough to stick my light through and seal it?

Also, what are people's sentiments to putting alittle but of grass (regular grass, if thats what you're thinking) that oxidizes readily around the edges of the inside of the growing container outside of the casing tray to give the 'shroomies some fresh oxygen and take up the slack when i'm gone for the day. Then I would fan in the morning, late afternoon, and night.
