Water Consumption Monitoring
    #3916558 - 03/14/05 01:54 PM (19 years, 18 days ago)

While showering today, I had a notion to electronically guage the water flowing through the pipes and out of the shower head.

All the technology needed are ones that already exist. Making it that much easier. You could limit the amount of water used, and have a waterproof digital feedback display in the shower, counting down the amount of water left, the tempature of the water, etc...

I think it would be pretty cool. And definitely possible. I'm going to see if there are product available commercially already that I could use. I'm sure Home Depot has something.

Well there are monitors out there that are usually used in businesses and industrial applications. Some can be used in the home but I haven't seen many that are marketed for home use.

They are usually simple small turbines that are mounted in a piece of tube that you put inline with your water supply and they are usually connected to some fancy on-board LCD display or something.

In this day and age, it might not be a bad business idea to think of a system that comes with multiple small in-line units with remote technology that can be linked to a central unit which is connected to a common pc. This would allow users and contractors to monitor water consumption in a house or business to pinpoint problem areas of high consumption.

This kind of monitoring is common in industries that work with liquid products but it is very expensive for full systems and not usually done with water.

I work a couple weeks in a high tech paper plant every summer, and they have tonnes of similar setups, I'm going to try and talk to someone that knows about..One of the engineers or something.
