No not necessarily. But you should add h2o2 into the water. If its a pint size jar i put two capfuls in, which usually is about 5-10cc

I dunked my cakes in cold tapwater, no problem. No h2o2. Adding that is safer, so they say...

It just makes that variable of bacteria that much less. It is a very good idea to do when dunking, along with having it in the fridge.
Sludge, he said he had already used tap water. It was too late for him to do distilled.

always better ways, but I never had any contams on my cakes and 9 out of 10 times used tapwater without additives and not preboiled..
Colonized cakes are tough creatures......

ok, but not the best
many people will propably bash me for that, but the water in my PMP is mostly plain tapwater, not pre boiled.
Better is to boil it 15 minutes, let cool, and then use it. Also here people will advice to use h2o2. But I keep things as simple as possible. People will tell you, that you cant do g2g or agar without flowhood or glovebox, again, this can be done without that stuff.
But there are always better/safer ways.
For me better is high return on (low )investment, so far so good.

I always also dunk in plain tap water. I wash the old casing material off prior to the dunk under a faucet of running tap water. I've found it's best to dunk in the refrigerator. This is not for cold shocking which is a myth(for cubensis), but instead to keep bacteria under control during the dunk. After dunking, I always rinse under the kitchen faucet once again to remove that nasty slime gilbert mentioned. Re-case and place back in fruiting conditions. RR

A couple of things for you guys to remember: #1 Fully colonized cakes are very resistant to contams, and by fully colonized that means throughout the cake. #2 Not all tap water is the same period. Boiled water is mighty cheap (free) insurance and peroxide works as well. So basically odds are already in your favor it's up to you if you want the added protection. GL

true
but...I would never use Seattle city tap water, right out of the tap...the water quality is terrible....full of chemicals. I always let mine sit for 24 hours...then boil it.
And...I always have a few gallons of distilled or purified water on hand.

Such a bad idea. h202 sucks, it retards growth. Mycelium fight off infection so just tap water will work. Fungi perfecti recomends spring or rain water, distilled water being the least favorable due to tthe fact that it has NO minerals

H2O2 does retard you are correct tahoe but in weak concentrations it's affects are not noticable.
Minerals equal nutrients not something you really want on the outside of your cakes or in your casing mix IME. Besides the minute amount of minerals will do little for your shrooms but it will do alot for any contam spores trying to germinate.

I've never seen any problems with growth from using distilled or purified water.
