Hard Drive Question
    #3908252 - 03/12/05 04:54 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I purchased a hard drive, which I installed into an external enclosure. I've been having trouble with it (data corrupting, etc.).

I was wondering what jumper settings I am supposed to be using if it is being used as an alternate storage unit.

Thanks.

Slave, generally, but I doubt this is affecting your data loss. What file system and what OS are you operating it from?

Also, it might not need to be slave, anyway, as I am not sure if it considers itself master on a seperate IDE through the USB enclosure... Mayhap Cable Select would be a better setting in this case.

Probably a deeper issue going on here.

i'd use CS, but that wouldnt be your problem. try setting it to slave and putt it in you computer case. if it still corrupts, might be a bad disk or 'needle'.

Sounds like a bad drive.

I always use master. when I use slave, it doesn't work.

make sure that before you turn it off or unplug it you do the "Safely Remove Hardware" routine.

if you do all that, and it still fails, send/take it back! most hard drives that fail within their warranty period will fail in the first 6 months of operation.

Is the external enclosure connecting via USB? if so I would say master is the setting you want

Pin 28 on the IDE ribbon cable is used for cable select. If a drive sees this signal as grounded, it's the master, but if it floats (unconnected), it is the slave. Since modern IDE controllers simply ground pin 28 at the interface, making one of these cables requires no external signal wires or touching the motherboard in any way.

It turns out that CS cables can be used for all IDE purposes, because drives jumpered for Master or Slave simply ignore the CS line anyway.

I would use CS.

I think the reason why I could be having corrupted data is the fact that my laptop is runing usb1.1 ports. The data takes forever to get moved, so I think that may be part of it. I'm gonna buy a firewire enclosure and if it still doesnt work, I'll have to get a new drive.

you'll probably be better off with a firewire enclosure... usb 1.1 is really bad. though if you have another hard drive that you can use then i would recommend trying to swap out the drive in your enclosure with a known good drive to check and see if your hard drive isn't really the problem. also make sure that everything inside and outside of your enclosure is connected well..
