I just finished reading a short book by Robert Harris titled "POMPEII".
Volcanoes dominate.

Current status is Volcano Advisory (Alert Level 2); aviation color code ORANGE
Growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continues, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. During such eruptions, episodic changes in the level of activity can occur over days to months. The eruption could also intensify suddenly or with little warning and produce explosions that cause hazardous conditions within several miles of the crater and farther downwind. Small lahars could suddenly descend the Toutle River if triggered by heavy rain or by interaction of hot rocks with snow and ice. These lahars pose a negligible hazard below the Sediment Retention Structure (SRS) but could pose a hazard along the river channel upstream.
The lava dome is growing on Mt.St. Helens.
I also saw on the National Geographic channel that Yellowstone National Park is a Mega Volcano.
Then there is Hawaii, which is a nice enough place, except for the whole island chain is volcanoes.

Scientists seek source of Mount St. Helens blast
VANCOUVER, Washington (CNN) -- Scientists want to peer inside the crater of Mount St. Helens on Wednesday to locate the origins of a plume of ash and steam that spewed nearly seven miles high into the air Tuesday night.
Geologists cautioned the explosion wasn't necessarily a harbinger of a larger or more destructive eruption.
The U.S. Geological Survey in Vancouver began a 24-hour volcano watch after the eruption at 5:20 p.m. (8:20 p.m. ET). Nearly five hours later, the plume remained visible in satellite photos.
Glowing tendrils of lava were spotted inside the mountain's crater following the explosion. Although the plume rose nearly twice as high as one produced by the last eruption in October, the geological agency classified the event as "small," according to an advisory on the Web site of its Cascades Volcano Observatory.
No damage or injuries were reported. Some air traffic had to be routed around the plume as it rose to 36,000 feet.
The ash remained in the air over Montana on Wednesday and was visible for more than 50 miles (80 kilometers), prompting some motorists to stop their cars and watch.
I just knew something was going to happen with a volcano yesterday.

something happens everyday with a volcano, theyre all over the place. yout think volcanoes are awesome try a super volcano. like the one in yellowstone park that was 1,000 X the power of the Mt st helens blast!!

so whatcha think? is Mt St Helens gonna blow her top and fill the atmosphere with sunlight-reflecting ash, plunging earth into another ice age? because that would really chap my ass. (literally!)

I don't think Mt St Helens has the capacity to create an ice age...

Who knows what Mt. St. Helens will do? Only Nature for certain.
St. Helens IMO seems to be building up to something, what that something is or to the degree that it happens will be interesting to see.

do individual volcanoes have different 'capacities'? isn't it more that each volcanoe is a hole in the crust, all leading to the same extremely huge reservoir of magma..?

Yeah what about it? It's a volcano yes?
Is it acting up recently?

kilimanjaro was just an example..it's basically dead but it still steams.. i'm just saying there are lots of volcanoes that you don't think about, and the real surprising disasters probably aren't going to happen in the US, where places like mt st helens, mt rainer, and yellowstone are pretty heavily monitored. i think the real surprising diaster will be in another country with less active monitoring. for example, pinatubo had no written history of volcanic activity before 1991 (if i remember right), but when the volcanologists went there after it started to stir, they noticed huge ash deposits and evidence of massive past pyroclastic flows. it's main eruption turned out to be 4-5 times greater that mt st helens in 1980...
the discovery channel is going to be running one of it's specials co-produced with BBC...it's about supervolcanoes. i think it'll be on BBC this month, and discovery channel on the 10th of next month i think.

Supervolcanoes is where it's at. Yellowstone has a gigantic magma chamber underneath it that goes a 1 kilometer down (i think, don't hold me on this) but i'm certain it's underneath the entire reserve. They found out about it because parts of forestry had been submerged with water from ponds & such. They found out that the ground was bulging out. No wonder there are hot springs. They said if it blows it will cover the earth's atmosphere in ash for 3 years, which in turn would lower the global temperature by 11 degrees. This would destroy a gigantic amount of plant & animal life. Anyway.....i'm off to bed.

does that fact that one disaster is more surprising than another make it more severe?
just because mt st helens is monitored doesn't mean that, if it were to suddenly blow, we'd be any less screwed than if it wasn't monitored
