Half-Assed Half-Pint

I have a half-assed half-pint jar. First let me explain whats half-assed about it. I made myself some white rice (kraft minute rice to be exact) and had some left over. I took the rice put it in a half-pint jar, microwaved it for 2 minutes to sterlize, let cool over night with the lid tightly on. The next day I squirted about 2cc of a old syringe I had laying around and let sit with the lid loose for air exchange. Im getting pretty good growth so far, and no contaims. When its 100% i plan on casing it. What are the odds it will fruit when fully colonized? It seems to me that there wouldnt be nearly enough nutrients, but if it was lacking so much would it have even started colonizing?

it is very possible that everything will work out just fine.

mixing in some inert material like verm would help reduce the posibility of anerobic contams and will serve to help store and transport moisture later

maybe next time i cant finish all my rice ill throw some verm in with it, yester id say the jar was 25% colo. today it looks more like 45-50% colonized

Alright, i dont know if anyone cares, but this could be a good thread to have laying around to show major newbies just how easy growing can be.

I cased said jar tonight, i put a wet papertowl soaked with water and h2o2 in a 2x2x3in container, then covered with 1in verm and crumbled the cake then covered with more verm, then sprayed the top of the case with water+h2o2 then put in a much larger container with wet perlite (put in 1 inch of perlite, then doused it with water, then sprayed with water+h202. Covered with tinfoil now im going to let it sit for a few days, ill cold shock in nessecary, and report on it in a few days.


(h2o2 is hydrogen peroxide, a topical you can find just about anywhere)

Hmmmm, white rice? I got tons of this laying around. Maybe I could make a mixture of white rice/verm/millet, and case that with some pasturized grass (dry grass from yard, and yess it works) or dung and then fruit.

Two days later: I have mycelium peeking up through the top casing layer, i figure in two-three days ill need to go ahead and cold shock it, to start the pinning. So far so good, no sign of contamination.

Sounds like a good idea if the thing becomes totaly overlayed, but cold-shocking sounds like a good idea for pre-overlay. Quite a few people claim this works. Then again, they might have started pinning at the same time regardless of if it was shocked.
