pint and 1/2 pint....

My friend bought some pint jars by mistake becuase he really wanted 1/2 pint and I was wondering if he could just use the same amount of substrate in the pint jar? (i.e. fill it only to the middle) Hes worreid that he will get contams and they won't colonize because of peoples horror stories. Are pint jars really that more risky than 1/2 pint?

HMM I would say....just double the recipe and use a larger cake. The only thing is..will take a little longer to colonize but....on the other hand..you will have a bigger cake!

Hmm...

Ive never heard much about trying just to fill it up halfway. It does seem that it would work, but I dont know. You should try it out in half and try filling the rest.

Maybe with a thicker layer of dry verm on top of the half filled pint jar you'd have a less chance of contams, but.... ??

Or just return your jars and buy new ones! :smile:

good point hipppy.

i wouldnt recomend filling the pint jars half way, seems like such a waste. it would be harder to inoculate also. just use them as pints, the cakes will be bigger too. i think youll be fine they will colonize fine for you. as long as you work carefully and clean you should have no probs with contams. youll be ok man!

I've PC'd pint jars with no probs. I can't see why they would break.
