Re: h2o2 when dunking? [Re: gsmith]

H202 can be harmful to mycelical tissue if you use too much. A minute amount 1:200 is plenty, if that. Drug store type of H202 contains a lot of toxins. If you want to avoid that type, there is a food grade type that is 35%. No toxins. Simply dllute to 3% and use it straight. Besides, H202 is only good for bacteria, not mold.

It contains no toxins. It contains ONLY 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% distilled water. It will not harm mycelial growth at 1:10 dilutions. You really heard some false shit about h202 man and you need to do some more playing with it. You can soak a casing in 3% h202 off the shelf for 12 hours and the casing will still be alive and well. That may stunt it a day or two, but thats straight 3%. I dunk and mist with 1:10 dilution ALL the time. With pins on and all. Does NO harm and LOTS of good.

Please read the note at the bottom of the page on this link and read the back of any drugstore type of 3% h202 for poison control info.

i'm sorry but this is bullshit. They're just trying to sell their unstabilized h2o2.

Here's what my label says on my h2o2 bottle:

Active Ingredient: Hydrogen Peroxide (stabilized) 3%
Inactive Ingredient: Purified Water

That stabilizer is acetanilide. aka acetic acid amide. "Acetanilide is used as an inhibitor in hydrogen peroxide and stabilizer for cellulose ester varnishes. It is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of rubber accelerators, dyes and dye intermediate and camphor. It is used as a precursor in penicillin synthesis and other pharmaceuticals and its intermediates."

It is not a recognized health hazard, but is suspected as being a general toxin. It is recognized as an irritant. Have you ever grouted a tub with silicon? this is what is given off in the vapors when it's curing. It's also what gives pharmacy bought h2o2 it's smell.

oh it's also white vinegar...

It also says: Avoid swallowing. If swallowed, get help or contact poison control center right away.

The poison control center will tell you that: Hydrogen peroxide is corrosive to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes at high concentrations (>10%); lower concentrations may cause irritation. Other effects occur from inhalation or ingestion and may include gas embolism, gastric irritation, gastric distension and emesis, an accumulation of fluid in the lungs, unconsciousness, and respiratory arrest. Symptoms become more severe as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide increases. Ingestion of dilute solutions (3-10%) produces mild gastrointestinal irritation, gastric distension and emesis, and on rare occasions, gastrointestinal erosions or embolism. (an embolism is bubbles in yer blood)

When I gargle with it, it's diluted to 1-2%. When I put it in my humidifiers, it's diluted to .3%. Both concentrations well below anything considered mildly hazardous.

However I did find this also: "The common thought for years has been that hydrogen peroxide is a poison. This, however, is a myth and it is now discovered that you desperately need hydrogen peroxide. It would be in your water if you drank rainwater. It?s in your food if you eat the green chlorophyll in the tops and outside leaves. There is a high content of hydrogen peroxide in breast milk. It oxygenates your body."

And as I posted earlier, your body produces hydrogen peroxide naturally.

IT'S NOT A POISON!
